I bought a second-hand G50/20 ‘box last week which appears to be stuck in gear and the selector is doing nothing.
I’m trying to find out what's involved to strip it and find the problem. If it's not too difficult I may have a go at fixing it myself.
Are there loads of special tools required?
Is this a known problem?
Do springs fly everywhere when you take the housing apart?
Is there a manual or better still something online?
The detail bit.
The selector moves back and forth but changes nothing. At the half travel detent it will move sideways a few degrees but not fore and aft in that plane. I removed the detent spring which allowed me to 'feel' the fore and aft travel, it is doing nothing, I cannot feel any gear clusters moving and there is no weight to it.
It is in a gear.
Thanks
Steve

If there's a haynes manual covering a car with this gearbox then it will probably have a short gearbox section which will tell you to take it to a specialist. If this haynes manual had earlier editions then it's possible that it used to have detailed gearbox overhaul instructions and haynes decided to take them out on the basis that no one used them. This happened to me when I bought a haynes manual for a granada to help me sort out my ford gearbox in my old TVR. To cut to the chase I emailed Haynes complaining about the lack of detail in the gearbox section and they mailed me a photocopy of the original gearbox section within a couple of days for free. Might be worth a try if applicable.
The other route would be to check on ebay for the cd copies of official workshop manuals that appear every now and again for a few quid. You might find one for the appropriate car with that gearbox. I've managed to get hold of workshop manuals for a porsche 944 (american only car in the haynes) and the 929cc honda fireblade (no haynes available).
Regards,
Mark
