I appear to have a few drips of oil coming from the fins of my diff (GKN type). Its a bit difficult to see under there and I have not yet jacked up the car to get a good look - I would like some more advise first :-

a) Given that the oil is mostly over the middle two fins all the way down, what could be leaking ?

b) What oil do I use to top it up with and will I have to find a motor factors or will Halfords stock it ?

c) What size spanner/socket do I need to undo the oil filler plug ? And can I get it past the exhust (ir seems awfully close in that area ?

d) Should I leave it to a dealer/independent to sort out ?

Bob.

I had a leaky diff on my July 96 4.0. I bought the car at 2 years old. A couple of weekd later I noticed the diff leaking and tooki it back to the dealer. They said that TVR had modified the diff to add a breather. Dealer got the mod kit from TVR and fitted it under warranty soon after. No further problems. The way they explained it to me was that at speed, the movement of the diff was flinging oil out. This breather reduces the pressure in the diff so its not looking for a way out. When was your car produced???

Registration was Jan 1994 so its possibly the same problem. Is the breather visible from underneath the car ?
