Are you aware you've linked the L version which costs near a grand compared to the otherwise excellent non-L version for well under £500? I'm not sure I'd spend the extra for L build quality and IS on 100mm...

Yep i am sure!, just wandered what you thought. So if it was down to you what would you buy:

MPE-65
or
100mm Macro 2.8
?
I'm not sure which one i would like, could anyone help, what one is easiest to use etc?
cheers

[EDIT] Does the MPE-65 have Autofocus and a Image Stabilizer?

It depends what you want to do.

To me the 100mm macro is decent all round prime that happens to shoot pretty decent macro shots. If I wanted to get seriously into macro it would have to be the MP-65.

The 100mm and MP-E are completely different lenses. You can shoot portraits etc with the 100mm, where all you can shoot with the mp-e is the tip of someones nose (at best).

If you are looking for real close up stuff, then the mp-e is the way to go. It does have very limited use (maximum shooting distance from any object is 4 inches). No IS and no autofocus, it's all manual wink Also, the lens on it's own is pretty damned useless without a ring flash of sorts.

p.s. it's wondered

edited to say, the mp-e is the most difficult lens to use from the 9 that I have.

Saw the L series 100mm macro jobbie and to be honest don't think I'd go for one as the normal 100m that's half the price gets fantastic results as it is (see the macro thread for examples).

If I wanted to get very very serious about macro it would be the MPE65 rather than the L series macro.

Thanks, i've seen some very impressive Close Up Macros with the 100mm + Kenko extension tubes so i'll probably get the 100mm as its a good all rounder wink
cheers

The 100IS L macro is opticaly a match for the non L one, its no better. It is built better , weathersealed and the IS is great if you need/want it.

Again have a look through the macro thread to give ideas. I think it's Yellabelly that uses the marumi ring flash. Very cheap when looking at rival prices and even considered one myself if it weren't for the fact I picked up a Canon MT24 for not much more smile. You can get the Marumi's for £110 if you shop around as well.

I tend to use my flash most of the time now even during daylight to stop shadows occuring.

Hi Mini, 14-7 is correct, I use the Marumi and have been really pleased with it's performance for the money. It is sufficiently capable to give you good results from the outset, you can then move on to the more expensive flash systems later if that's what you want.
