Help selling a car abroad
Discussion
My mate is selling his TVR and someone from abroad has phoned him up to say they will come over to England, buy the car and drive it back. Now I know our cars are becoming more popular overseas but how do you go about getting payment sorted so you do not get ripped off. He is not on the Internet so can't ask the question here and does not seem to know that scams go off buying cars from over seas.
Any help would be much appreciated as I would not like to see him get ripped off.

I've sold a couple of cars abroad - no real concern, if you want a TVR / Lotus / kit car then the UK is the most sensible place to come.
Just make sure you have the cash and wave it goodbye! Often overseas buyers will want to keep the v5, I've never had a problem with this. So long as you write to the DVLA and tell them the date that you sold the vehicle and that it has been permanently exported then you've done everything you are required to do.

Don´t let im go with the car before you have the money in your hand!.
I´m a German Cerbera Owner and I bought it a few years ago in UK. I checked the Cerbera in a Garage and I saw that everything was fine. Than I went to a bank with the owner and I had from my German bank a guaranteed check. They gave the money in chash to me and a paid the owner. We posted the V 5 dokument and I drove the Cerbera home to Germany.
A serios buyer of a car must pay the car before he drives it home. I does not matter if he is form UK or from abroad.
Regards
Johannes

I recently sold my mates Corvette C6 Z06 to a buyer who flew up from the south of France. Everything was ligitimate but just be aware that if accepting a bankers draft from a foreign bank it could take weeks to clear and the exchange rate you get is whatever the rate is on the day it clears, not the day it's deposited into the bank. In my case there was a difference of several hundred pounds! Cash would be the best option.Any help would be much appreciated as I would not like to see him get ripped off.
Be careful with bankers draft. In my shop i did take a stolen one and the bank accepted it then took money back few weeks later. The only truly certain way is a electronic transter which can be done when they agree to buy the car and u can check your account after a cup of t. Even cash now adays i would want to go to the bank with them and have your bank accept it so you know its not dodgy. Just sold my x5 and the guy paid cash into my bank . I phoned bank they confirmed payment in and also confirmed it was cash paid in. One scam is to say doing transfer/cash payment in then put check in and stop it later. Still looks like a branch payment in though. Check check check............. On the up side most people are truthfull. If it feels wrong walk away..
Kevin.I would personally be very cautious, I am concerned how did he find the buyer with no access to internet etc. Cash is a problem, i.e laundered money and limits, forged notes, and problems with euros due to bank heists in Ireland etc. My bank manager told me to stay clear unless money transfered by electronic transfer. Then only release car after a few days when the cash is in your account, then move it to another account, so they cant take it back.

5yearstobuyatvr I put the advert on PH and the clubs site for Chris (he asked me to) I have told him about the info on here and there are a few things he didn't know, he is now very couscous and will be very careful (mind you Chris is nothing else but careful with his money)In the UK we now have 'faster payments'. This makes the whole process faster and safer. You have cleared funds avail in your account in mins to hrs (depending on a few factors). I dont think that cross Europe payments are yet on this system.
I would insist on cash and for it to be taken by the buyer to my bank and paid in to my account by a bank teller in front of me.

Not all banks are helpful counting large amounts of cash.MY BANK WOULD NOT DO IT.They would have to check each note individually.

I have had an equiry to sell mine to someone living in New Zealand. Anyone had an experience of this? I have looked on some export pages and it seems that it needs to have some sort of certificate before being allowed into NZ?
Surely, it's the buyers job to see if he can import the car.Tell him to send the dough over, the rest is up to him.
Hi,
Question out to anyone who can help thanks, had a look at few sites but all info i get is for people who want to import their car with them abroad not sell them.
Right I to am thinking of taking up the offer of someone abroad wanting to buy the car, its 2001 so about 9/10 years old.
Right hopefully itiejim can help me with this question as i believe u have done this before.
I need to know what exactly do i need to do on my part, right for instance if the buyer comes over to collect the car, do i just hand over the V5 as he may need it to prove on his side when he take it back that it not stolen etc... and for him to get the relevant info, also i know on the logbook there is a section for permanent import to fill in, see if i fill in that it would still mean that the car is under my name even when abroad so all things go back on me as under uk Rules I would be liable.
I could fill out his address on the log book but would it matter if it is in abroad? And I don’t think u can have a non uk address. (not to sure)
Could i ask what type of car you sold Itejim and how u went out about doing it, I.e any check you had to provide, paper work etc…
Also does the guy have to pay any extra taxes to take over to France ?
Very much appreciate any help in advance. Thanks

I think that might be of some help:
Your Registration Certificate (V5C) and you
Check section 4 Telling us about a permanent export on page 8.
You keep the small piece (section 11) and hand the rest of the V5C document to the buyer - he'll need it to get the car registered in his country.
Hope that helps,
Konrad

Careful with this idea as well. Doesn't matter if you move it to another account, the bank will just show your original account as being overdrawn and you'll still need to pay it back as such.At least as far as I know ...
I sold my S3 to a French guy a few years back. To ensure that the deal went smoothly I carried out an HPI check, prepared a dual language receipt stating that the car was, as far as I was able to tell, fault free and was sold as seen, tested and approved. We agreed a price prior to him coming over to collect the car and that payment should be in cash sterling.
He arrived at my home address as planned, I showed him the documentation which he understood, he test drove the car and the deal was done. I handed him the HPI report, the MOT certificate, the car handbook and history, his receipt and the V5, having completed the part for DVLA stating that the car had been permently exported. He handed me the cash which was as drawn from his bank and 'bundled' in £1000 bundles.
He drove away a happy man with a full tank of fuel bound for Dover. I went out and bought my Griff. Result.

That sounds the safest way to me. Lets not forget the buyer is at risk as well and os is also a little nervous.
