I negotiated a Stage 3 sports exhaust into the deal when I bought my Exige S last month. I've always had sports exhaust on my previous Lotuses, I loved the popping noise on the overrun on the demonstrator which was fitted with the same exhaust and I don't remember the demonstrator exhaust being that loud.

500 miles in and I'm ashamed to say I'm finding the sports exhaust too noisy to be honest. I've been doing about 50-80 miles a day basically just running it in, driving on A and B roads and small lanes. My ears actually hurt when I get home!

How noisy is the car with the standard exhaust fitted?

Cheers

Stock exhaust is dire, go for a Larini or a 2Bular. Larini is more "racy" and available off the shelf where as a 2Bular can be custom made to your requirements if you are prepared to wait.

Don't go Larini if you want things to be quieter _ all the ones we've recorded are louder than the stage 3, would suggest 2bular

Very impressed with my 2bular. I have a couple one quiet <98db and is superb. Gruff when you get a little spirited but very quiet around town. The second is a screamer. Gruff and burbly around town and howls and growls like crazy on second cam. I do alot of miles and I prefer the louder. Can't answer the phone though... ( not that I would cos that is illegal)

I am no longer young either, and went for a 2bular for my SC - Jim suggests the same for Exiges S and Elises SC.
The one I choose is not that loud but has a great sound quality - at constant legal speeds I can still listen to the radio, there is no drone as promised, when pressing on it screams (alongside with a TRD). Burbles nicely when driving in town.
Recommended.

The big, quiet 2bular is the one to go for IMO - it'll pass trackday restrictions too. Quiet when trickling around but screams when thrashed - and for some reason it really opens the performance up on standard 210-odd bhp S cars, Parky @ Lipscomb reckoned mine felt as quick as his 240 demonstrator since the 2bular was fitted. It certainly feels more eager to rev to the redline.

Of course, Jim will make it louder if you don't need trackday compliance, but you can certainly do 400 mile drives in an Exige S with Jim's quiet 2bular pipe and not get out feeling battered... I have, with girlfriend as passenger, and no complaints about the noise from her either.

I've taken the Larini off mine. It was louder than the stage 2 I had on the previous car and downright painful on the ears.

It's sound like the quiet 2bular model should fit the bill. Is the standard one really that bad?!

yes, the standard exhaust truly diminishes the Elise/Exige
experience.

i'm waiting a few days on a reply. i know it's pretty much a one-man-show so i figured email would be easier for them ..

Many exhaust manufacturers are aware of increasing noise restrictions - both Larini and Janspeed also make a quieter version of their exhausts.

Thank god for that; there are not that many track days I can go on with a clubsport.

I have a stock exhaust from a '56 Exige S cluttering up the place at the moment, it's yours if you want to try one before shelling out for a 2bular.

PM me if you're interested

Thanks but I've already bought fitted the 2bular - very happy.

I also have a stock Exige S exhaust and a Lotus Janspeed to get rid of!
