I just commented on this in the Random thread.

Can you believe thay give awards for such over edited ste? Great compositions totally ruined by HDR madness.

Number 5 looks like something from a Scoobydoo cartoon!

I think most of those are really good - but I have seen much better on here and other forums.

I really need to learn about this HDR business...

I was thinking along the same lines, I thought 5 had won "best computer generated landscape"

Hmm, what will I do today confused - I know I'll make a photo for photo of the year, oh yes this one looks tripe wobble, lets see what I can do with Photomatix type, hmmm, still not quite right confused, what if I then run it through Photoshop type and add some dramatic light coming through a crack in the clouds which didn't originally exist scratchchin, hmm, still not quite right scratchchin, maybe another run through photomatix will do the trick type, ahh better, but not colourful enough scratchchin, lets just turn all the knobs up to 11 music and try to get as much colour redcard as baz did in his pics from Leuven jester

lol, but in all seriousness - there are times that I go out deliberately to shoot HDR images and other times when I shoot conventionally, I'm not a big fan of the "recover an image" technique and rarely use HDR as such wink

..and I like HDR

Todays pic (not my best admittedly) is HDR... but I was using it to try and get back to what I saw... not make up something that never existed.

I am entirely happy with either, (fantasy is fun) but for some computer generated car crashes to win landscape photos of the year from the BBC is astonishing. LOADS of photos from you lot are way better than that crop.

HDR from today. It isn't as dramatic as the winners, but I had what I was presented with. It is, I hope 'honest'.

And that shows how difficult it is to get a really good landscape - ie one that stands alone without needing ketchup, mayo and BBQ sauce.

I dont mind a bit of HDR either, but it has to be subtle for me. And not over sharpened to the max with 100% contrast, colour saturation and + 50pts of loony tunes...

In terms of pure quality, to me, the pic should be as sharp as a tack with good composition.

I cant abide all this HDR rubbish to be quite honest.

Whilst Ive not studied Landscapes heavily (yet), in my trawls through the web, Ive yet to see landscapes as good as those by our very own Mr Carter .

Noooo, its a tool, one thats very easy to misuse, if you have a light touch and are subtle with it HDR works realy well.

But I agree, Mr Carter produces some very good images...

I think theres 2 camps in HDR.

1 - make it realistic, use it as a tool to cope with large dynamic ranges

2 - Use it as an imaging tool for dramatic (if unrealistic) effect.

I can cope with 2 if its done well or if 1 wouldnt produce intresting results...

HDR does have its place in landscape photog BUT it does have to be done subtly. It needs to be so subtle as the viewer doesn’t realise it’s a HDR. As with Steve’s pic above.

PS. My entry into the photo comp is a HDR, but don’t tell anyone.
