Finding out about family history

After having the folks over recently, I found out that my grandparents where quite heavily involved in the resistance during WWII. So I'm trying to do some family history/digging, but there's so much out there - can anyone recommend someone to pay to do this or a site where I can have a go? Half of the family is Dutch and the other South African most of what I've come up with is British. Would appreciate any advice.
