) Is there any real advantage to buying an expensive oil (Silkolene Pro S for example) vs the own brand stuff from Halfords? Is it worth the extra £20 for 5L?
to a deggree, the better the oil (more and more refined) the longer it will last before breaking down and going black.
If your changing the oil at 3000 or 6000 intervals then it doesnt really make any difference.
On these old engines, i go as far as semi-synthetic. Even looking at GTX Magnatec as the normal these days. That said, Dulford have just put Mobil1 motorsport in it ( i used to use this always)

Should have added filter VERY important, deffinately buy only good known brand. Oil will technically last almost for ever, its the pollutants (carbon etc) caused by combustion that mess it up, and make it go black. things like compressors in refrigeration plant can run 24/7 for years without oil changes !
On the subject of oil filters, I've made mine a little more accessable by changing from remote Saab brake fluid rservoir to the Fiesta type and repositioning that plastic catch tank thingy,

I had a suspicion that the semi/fully synth was to do with the life expectancy. I would use expensive stuff if I had a Speed 6 engine but having an old Ford engine i'm a little less worried. I just want to take care of it and thought I'd change the oil and filter (plus some other stuff on the 12k mile service schedule) just for peace of mind. Are there any suggestions for oil filter make? I have always just taken the easy route in the past and gone to Halfords or the local OEM garage for parts but I have discovered a motor factors about 10 minutes walk away so thought I'd go see what they offer.
On the oil front I think I may go take advantage of the Magnatec/mobil 1 offer at Halfords if it's still on tomorrow.

I've been using Millers CFS 10/60 for the last few years and it is excellent. The oil pressure is very good even when very hot and on idle and it was £30ish for 5L last time but think its gone up a bit since then. It is a fully synthetic race oil designed to be capable of high temperatures.

I agree with the idea that semi synth is fine but prefer to run mine on silkolene pro S.
As reccomended by Opie. Usually buy it when theres an offer on.
Might be a bit more expensive but over a year its not much. Think of how much spent every time you put petrol in.

d to get off otherwise.Well I got some mobil 1 as I thought I'd splash out, got a free umbrella as well although the offer has ended at Halfords. No idea what is in the engine at the moment but at least now I'll know.
Just have to find an oil filter now. I have one of those chain oil filter removal tools although I have no idea how I'm going to get it in there to get the filter out!
