Hey all, Been a while since I posted in here but thought i'd say Hi again...
I have added another car the the fleet now (Just a '96 Golf GTi) but was wondering if anyone in the Worthing area could recommend anyone that could fit some new springs into the golf?
I am not the most technically capable person but am willing to give stuff a go. But if someone knows of anyone that can do it cheap I could be persuaded to let someone else do it (quite easily!).

Car lowered, but...

I had to get the earlier mk3 gti top mounts to make the springs fit as the old tolp mounts slipped through the springs (yes they are the right ones) and was just wondering if anyone had had a similar experience of this before because now it feels like the shock or spring is knocking a little and there isn't as much thread coming through the top as there was before I started.

Bloody cars lol!

Any help would be appreciated, oh and it was just the springs I changed...

You talking about front or rear mate? When i did the coilovers on the VR had to replace the front top mounts aswell as they where shot.

Look at the difference in height. You can only do the top nut up so far as there is a wedge on the strut/in the top mount to stop it going any further. This may take into account the difference in thread length.

Also have you checked that the spring is sitting properly in the lower cup as it needs to sit up against the lip otherwise it will move when you steer giving a knocking noise as it moves. My old Ibiza did this no matter what! and that had 3 different suspension set ups and all did it, it was a known thing that happened.

Thats exactly what has happened I think mate, had another inspection this afternoon and when jacked up the spring lifts up with the car as it's attached to the top mount (came with built in bearings) so I am assuming this is what has happened.
When I rock the car by putting pressure on the wing with the bonnet open the top mount moves slightly so I am assumin this shouldn't happen.

I am going to have another look tomorrow, worse case it will go back to standard but it looks nice at the moment frown

I need to find a way of securing the spring in the bottom cup!

The top mount doesn't really move as its underneath but the cap that bolts down to hold the strut in place will move slightly. Eg. If you put it on full lock and look at them they will be at different angles but on flat ground and wheels straight they should be the same.

I'm just about to have a look but if i rock the car by pushing on the fron the bolt on the top of the strut (along with the strut) moves up and down. Now this I am assuming is not right?

I'll find out in a bit...

Sounds like the top nut isn't tight enough, did you hold the strut with a hex key when you did up the top nut?

Yeah sorted it now - that was the problem... Luckily my bro came over with his Van and he has a compressor and airgun in it and that did the trick. Just went over all the nuts with it to make sure they were all tight.

Now looks like this

Thanks for your help though biggrin

Yeah still got the old girl! Replaced rear wheel bearings, discs, pads and ABS rings yesterday and need to sort out why its not charging/holding a charge properly now, never ending! But the noise of the V6 at full beans always seems to win me back over again!

Thanks for the comments on the website, I do it myself so always good to get feedback!

Thats ok, it does look very inviting - almost made me want to get mine done lol!

I need to do the ABS rings on the back of mine soon. But it's only a second car runabout as the mrs has the main car so this is just to get me to work and back but i'm starting to like it more than I should lol!
