Sauber will use exactly the same engine as Ferrari in 2004.

The Swiss team announced on Monday that Ferrari had agreed to supply them with the very same power units as the Ferrari F2004 will use.

The decision is likely to have been forced on Ferrari by this year's change in engine regulations. Now powerplants must last the whole grand prix weekend, with any driver who has to change being dropped 10 places down the grid.

The new Sauber, named the C23, is also equipped with Ferrari’s seven-speed gearbox.

Technical director Willy Rampf said the team had taken a pragmatic approach with the design of the new car.

He said: "Owing to the fact that we will not be able to start working in our new wind tunnel until after the roll-out of the C23, this solution made sense to us more than any other."

Team boss Peter Sauber added: "Our goal for 2004 is to clearly increase our performance. How well we’ll be able to do this primarily depends on how quickly we’ll be able to translate the results of our wind tunnel work to the race track.

"Certainly, the presence of seven automotive manufacturers has made the competition in Formula 1 fiercer than ever, but we’re ready to accept this challenge."

Sauber have also unveiled two new sponsors, the port of Sokhna on the Red Sea and Chinese life insurance company Tai Kang Life.

thats some deal they have there with their new power unit, the new wind tunnel and a half decent driver line up, Sauber may be a force to be reckoned with this year.

What tyres do they run? If they run Michelin while Ferrari run Bridgestone :hmm:

All the engines will be equal but some will be more equal than others (apologies to George Orwell).

thats a shame, could have had an interesting situation there As for engines been equal? Well, I wouldn't expect Ferrari to give latest and greatest engine, but they will be getting this years spec primary spec and limited upgrades in the future I would imagine.

It's more the point that Jag/BAR are now in the doo-doo - the sauber is bound to have a better engine and gearbox than them I reckon.

Would like to disagree there - on the basis that Honda are bound to get it right sooner or later. Just checked itv-f1 though, and it looks as though Sato has just had another HUGE blow out.

Williams, McClaren, Ferarri, Sauba, Renult then

Is'nt Fisichella driving for Sauber this year?

A good driver. This combo could be the upset of the season.

I sure hope so.

Why dont they just rename the team to
Sauber Petronas Ferrari B.

I heard that they are also sharing chassis data too. Guess they really are a Ferrari B team!

Have you seen the pics in Autosport?

The 2004 Sauber is a carbon copy of the 2003 Ferrari. Ferrari B team indeed..

At least Sauber got the designs for the Ferrari legitimately and did'nt knick them like Toyota !
