Sainsburys ones are always very good. Last year my work canteen were selling hot home-made mince pies, with proper thick short bread. Unfortunatly I got a little addicted to them and put on a few pounds :-)

Aldi mince pies are quite often top of various taste tests.

I had to console myself with Tesco ones last night though as I haven't yet got round to making my own batch.

I might have one a year, usually just before XMAS when they are lying about in the office. In my opinion in should be illegal to sell them in any other month than December.

My colleague and I conducted an exhaustive test of all the local supermarket's mince pies a few years ago, however I struggle to remember the final outcome. Oh well. Might just have to do it again hehe.
same here. my mate even went to fortnum & mason and harrods to increase the sample size, as we'd already tried selfridges and harvey nicks as well as every supermarket and bakers we passed by. i seem to remember the best ones were from jack fulton's in some pisspot village in north wales, they were lush.

i recently started a pork pie taste test but gave up when i looked at the nutritional info!

Probably because like the rest of us sane people we don't want Christmas rammed down our throats 3 months in advance hehe

Made a big batch of mincemeat last autumn so it should be pretty tasty by the time we get round to making mince pies this year

I must say, that having tried many mincemeats over the years, from basic to 'posh', that my favourite now is the regular Tesco Mincemeat product. You have to pay so much extra for added this, that and the other and invariably the taste is ruined. (IMO, naturally)

But Mince pies are all year round items, nothing to do specifically with Christmas, like Cadburys Cream Eggs are year round items too, and nothing to do specifically with Easter. You'll be telling us we can only eat a Mars bar at summer solstice next.

On those grounds, trees with tinsel are a year round item, just like tacky elevator music, wrapped up presents, carols and just about anything else festive.

Mince pies are one of the most Christmassy things ever invented- and have been for about 200 years.

Creme eggs were invented by Cadburys specifically for Easter.

Get so annoyed with Christmas stuff outside of December- all it does is dilute the fun of christmas and make it feel less special.

Since we're on the subject, can we talk about short pastry v puff pastry?

I prefer my mince pies to be light and crispy packets of puff-pastry goodness lick, whereas I think the majority enjoy the deep filled kipling-esque variety.

It's so difficult to find a puff pastry mince pie, even in season!

I can't be the only one, can I?

they used to though

then the mince got replaced by beef suet (which was lovely)

and now you can't even get non-veggie mince pies (well not without hassle anyway)
