I've got wallpaper on the kitchen ceiling and want to get it replastered. Will I need to strip it first, or can I apply PVA over it to seal it?

Definitely not!

Needs to be stripped completely then sealed.

Are you doing the plastering yourself? Surely if you're getting someone in to do the plastering, they'd tell you what prep work to do?

No offence or anything, but wouldn't it just be easier to get builders in?

Property developing might not be your "thing".

Cheers Darron! In one other room, the old lath and plaster ceiling was partly down, so I created a stud framework 10cm lower then boarded that. Can I screw plasterboard over the old ceiling directly into the joists or do I need to lower the ceiling here too?

Screw the plaster board straight over the existing mess and into the joists. Making a framework is just making work for yourself!

What lighting are you going to put it?

You would then need to fit new skirting and architrave and the door would not close flush, not so sure thats a good idea?

Jesus you are clueless, I am so bad at DIY i have been banned from doing it but surely common sense says sticking plaster to wallpaper is a none starter.

why is it whenever plastering is mentioned people get condescending answers?

talking of which have just removed the blown layer of top plaster from a wall that someone else had botched.

now how exactely do u plaster on top - am making it up as i go on its the only way you learn anything!

Best way to think about it is how will the paper and glue take the weight of the plaster?

It wont! wink

Yes, remove paper otherwise once the moisture from the wet plaster soaks into the paper it will fail and you will have 2 bags of wet multi finish on your floor.

If ceiling is stable then there is no need to take it down or overboard. Just scrim the cracks and have it skimmed.
