Hello. I'm would like to buy a D300, either a used, second hand, very good condition one, or new. If new, I'd appreciate any links to the best possible price if you happen to know a good place. If you have one and would like to sell, please let me know. Many thanks. Cliff.

I have a D300 which has had very little use as I prefer the D200. I'm undecided whether I should turn it back into cash, or keep it in the cupboard for a rainy day...

Interresting. How come you prefer the D200?

Well, since you ask, it all comes down to what I do and how I like to do it. I know the D300 has better high ISO ability (arguably 1600 over 800) and the zoom/scroll playback is faster, BUT:

1) Workflow for RAW processing: Only Capture One Pro 3.7 does the job the way I like it. D300 NEFs are incompatible. The two logical alternatives, C1 Pro 4.1 and Lightroom 2 just don't do the simple things I want.

2) When I'm shooting weddings I use two monitor functions a lot - 100% crop (to check focus) and a big histogram (to check exposure). On the D300 these are mutually exclusive.

These two factors mean that I'm unhappy using the D300 'in combat' and also in processing. And so ironically the D200 is used for the serious stuff and the D300 is used for JPG snaps and as back-up body!

Thanks for your replies. John you have mail. Thanks.

Another query. Is the D300s any better than the D300 for low level light? Or is the only added extra on the "S" the video mode (which I don't need)? Thanks.

Currently, Currys' stores are selling their display models for £899 if that's your thing. Not mine, so bought an S.

Interesting Simpo. What are the simple things you want/do ? I've a D300, so C1 Pro 3.7 isn't going to be an option for me, but am always on the look out for simpler packages for doing things. At the moment I'm using Lightroom 2.4.
