I will keep this simple.

I have a 2001 Fiat Punto 1.2 Active (59K), recently when setting off from a standstill I get a lot of 'juddering' from engine bay as if its about to stall, even though there are plenty of revs.
This occurs both in 1st and reverse.
However it is not a constant occurrence, I've been out all day with the car doing city driving (stop-start) and its been fine, however I just nipped out to move it in front of my house and the juddering was back??

I fear its the clutch or possibly the ECU frown .

Also one of the warning lights on the dash has begun to glow, according to the manual its the 'glow-plug light' however mine is a petrol car. rolleyes
Although its not actually ON its just faintly glowing?

So PH here is the question, has anyone experienced this problem with Puntos? Better yet are there any Fiat/Mechanic Bods on here who know what is going on? ( even just an idea?)

There is an independent Fiat/Alfa specialist (Leeds: Turin Motors) near me and I'll book it in for a service/investigation tomorrow, but any help would be appreciated.

Hard to tell without seeing it happen, but it might be misfiring. Ours developed a definite hesitation/judder and it turned out to be a duff HT lead.

As far as I can tell/heard its not miss-firing and the juddering is not translated through the pedals.

Engine mount could be a possibility I'll have a gander first-thing.

Thanks for the quick responses.

And just before the PH Hyenas appear, I'm not a complete novice with a spanner I restored a Morris Minor as my first car and an MGB.
But this is my first Italian vehicle and well you hear the horror stories frown

The HT lead dying was the only thing that's gone wrong with ours in 3 years so they obviously aren't all that bad. smile

This happened to mine. It feels a bit like it's stalling, yet not the same. It tends to only happen when you're pulling away, not when you're moving at speed. It was the clutch release bearing.

Not sure if you'll need a whole new clutch or if it can be fixed serperately. I'd get it seen to pronto, though- I ignored it (was working away from home a lot- thought it could wait) and it got worse until the car was literally undrivable and ended up costing me near £300, IIRC, thanks to the extra damage I managed.

This, a new exhaust and the window wiper system breaking were the only problems I ever had with the car in four years and 60,000 miles (32-92K) of ownership.

mine did this, sold it, only occured in cold weather for some reason, i think it was clutch judder, unevenly worn plate or something, once warmed up the judder would go away, i expect you will notice it much more with the icy mornings in the near future.

On a +ve point mine was like that for ages, the clutch didn't fail, if its like mine it can be quite a judder stressing the gearbox ect and engine mounts, get it fixed if you plan to keep the car (new clutch).

Sounds like ECU failure to me.

You can't fit a 2nd hand one either.

Has to have a new one.

Jack.

My 2002 1.2 Active did this too, it occurred randomly usually when the car fully warmed up after being driven for a while. We took it to FIAT a few times but they never could find a problem. It did it for the entire 5 years the car was in my family without getting any worse. It does seem to be a common problem with Puntos.
