Best free photo editing software

[SirClarke]

Hi all,

Being a bit skint at the moment and having only fairly recently bought an SLR i'd like some software to play around with pictures on but really can;t justify buing Photoshop at the moment.

Does anyone have recommendations for good free software that's fairly straight forward to use and will just let me tidy up and fiddle with a few pics with minimal effort?
Cheers,

gimp is pretty popular

Gimp gets quite a few mentions in posts such as these. I believe it is quite well stacked with editing features, though I don't know how intuitive it is to use, having never used it myself.

I'm a lot better with computers then I am with cameras so should be able to pick up any software as long as it's not too technical.

Will have a look at Gimp, cheers chaps. And if I manage to actually get any shots I'm happy with I might post 'em.
