Bit of a weird one, but I would like to understand why I like some racing games and not others, I mean I have my reasons but can't explain why I think this when the masses have no issue with said games!

Historically I owned a PS1 and PS2 and fell in love with GranTurismo (1, 2, 3, 4), infact it was pretty much the only game I played on those consoles. For me the game was perfect, everything from the handling characterstics to the fact you could "racing modify" all normal cars, I mean that was awesome!

I had a spell with an Xbox and was totally addicted to PGR (1 and 2 I think) but soon changed abck to the PS2.

I currently have an Xbox360 and have been playing Forza 2 pretty much to completion but Im not nearly addicted as I was to GT, I mean the class system annoys me, you cant "racing modify" standard cars and there is no "ultimate car" (read F1 car that was in GT4) to aspire to own.

I was howeve hooked on PGR4, so much fun!

I played NFS: Shift for an hour and hated it, the handling etc was awful and no fun to play, the same can be said for Grid that lasted about 4 hours with me.

Now where I am going wrong? Why can't I get "into" any games like I have with GT and PGR4??

Im fairly sure Im going to by a PS3 purely to play GT5... I think Im slightly mad!!

That's usually it for me. I like all the games you've mentioned and it's because it feels like the cars have grip and you can 'feel' when they're approaching the edge. I think it's the simulation factor. Games like Need For Speed feel, to me, like the cars corner as if pivoting on a pole running vertically through the center of the car (if that makes sense). It puts me off straight away.

I'd think that would be the same with any car nut.

Yep thats exactly what I mean, its the realism that makes it a challenge and extemly fun to play! What I can't pinpoint is why I like GT so much more than Forza when the latter is arguably the better game!

I remember back to GT3 (I think).. Escudo on the pikes peak hill climb sealed the deal for me! Having not read anything about GT5 or remember too much about GT4, I do hope something simlar will be offered this time round (and the ability to racing modify "standard" cars)

I just wish they would hurry up with GT5, or I'm gonna cave in and end up buying a 360 for the sole purpose of playing Forza 3 for a few months.

I think I know what you mean about Forza. I played it for a few months until I swapped my XBox for a PS3. I wonder whether Forza is a bit more of a slow burner, whereas GT and PGR are a bit quicker at getting to the exciting bits. I did start to get bored with Forza initially, but I don't think that I gave it a proper go.

The wait for GT5's getting really annoying, I don't want to buy an Xbox just for Forza 3, so I'm just gonna have to sit it out until GT5. That said, I was in Blockbuster today considering Dirt2 and Race Driver Grid as a stop gap.

Anyone played those?

I may not be the best source of opinion but I rented DiRT2 and also didnt like it (unsurprisingly). It seemed too arcadey (read flashy and americanised) and the physics didnt seem as pure as they used to do with previous installments (pre DiRT).

Ive heard alot of other people raving about it though smile
