Is the 50D a worthwhile upgrade from a 10D? Should be seeing some decent falls in price now the 7D has arrived and I'm struggling to justify what will be a £5-700 increment when we get a settled retail price on the new body.

I know many have chosen not to upgrade from 30D and 40D becasue the incremental improvements have not been that huge.

There also appears to be plenty of BS on the web about noise etc of a 15MP APS-C sensor which I would appreciate some owners insight on.

Cheers

I would think so, having used a 30D for 3 years (and the gf's 40D), and recently a 10D at work I can report that the later models are noticeably nicer to use (and expect the 50D to be slightly better still). The image quality may not be a massive step up (haven't done any direct tests), but just for faster viewing, better screen and interface I think it's probably worth it. try in a shop or even rent one for a day, I think 50D bodies are pretty cheap to rent. Not tried one myself, so can't comment on noise but I wouldn't expect it to compare badly to the other #0D series though....hope that helps!

If i recall the 50d performs pretty badly in terms of high iso noise compared to the 40d. They tried to cram too many MP onto a crop sensor before the technology was ready (7d)

Thanks both...fingers crossed for the 7d price tanking then. Will drop in and have a look at both.

7D price wont talk its a good camera.

50D is OK , you wont think the high ISO is bad after a 10D, it just isnt , per pixel, great, but theres a damned lot of pixels... Print wise its OK, good think is in good light you get massive detail.

You could pre order them for £1399 which is already a fair bit under the 5dmkII. I'd guess that they'll be closer to £1200-£1300 for Christmas...

Yeah you kinda figure some under RRP anyhow but I dont expect it to plumet much over time , unless your £ gets a lot stronger.

I'd love to see the price of the 7D in the UK tank - compared to the US it's currently an even greater piss take than usual for these sorts of goods.

Dollar for pound pricing really sticks in the throat...should be about £1k if it was parity with across the pond.

Makes the 50d a good proposition at £735 and dropping...can't see the 7d getting within £500 of that.

Depends what you want it for...

Mine's a back up to a 1DMK2N,or to be more accurate it's for when i can't be bothered carrying the 1D wink. I go above ISO 1000 a handfull of times in a year, usually on Rallies in Winter so any noise issues are irrelevant to me. Having said that i've messed around with ISO 3200 out of curiosity and found it more than acceptable as long as you're not printing posters.

As my left arm is a bit knackered at the moment, the 50D was pressed into service at Croft on Saturday..

Kit used for the whole day was the 50D/Sigma120-300/1.4TC.
