my own car is coming off the road and onto blocks next month for a mini refurb (steering rack, suspension bushes and replace all coolant hoses) so god knows what I'll find... so I sympathise really

Hey all
Just a thought - i'm (this very minute!) having a 'holed' outrigger repaired by a local classic car specialist in Acton, London.
Having shopped around I was getting quotes of around £2k to do a full chassis refurb (body lift, wire brush, cut/replace rusty bits, repaint and waxoyl) but then was recommended by a friend with an old MG Costello to try some local guys. I must admit the chassis is otherwise fairly good so the idea of spending so much to repair a small hole on a single outrigger left me a little cold inside if you know what I mean!
The local garage (can I name them?) took a look said they felt they could do a cut and replace without needing to lift the chassis and quoted around 6-7 hours labour plus ~£200 for a full waxoyl (inside and out of tubes). That's quite a decent saving if it works! Even if it gets me through a couple of more MOTs i'm happy.
I'm hoping to hear from them today (dropped the car off yesterday morning) about how it's gone and what the final cost is - and i'll post up my findings....but it may be an alternative to having a more expensive body life repair done?
I'm aware of the 'how will they weld the top of the tube?' question and intend to see for myself later when I (hopefully!) go and collect it. But if it's good news maybe you could try them, as in real terms you'd be looking at ~£600 inc VAT instead of a much larger (albeit more extensive!) repair bill.

Its a TVR so what did you expect! Dont worry about it just get on with it! Seriously if you need any help with the bodylift let me know. One part lift and one full lift within the past three years and i ALMOST know what im doing. Are you doing at home, how do you intend to lift it. Your going to have to let us know and try doing it with a few more sentences than what we normally get off your good self

Quick catch up on my outrigger repair:
Spoken to the garage and they say they've successfully replaced the whole length of outrigger on the n/s of my S3 without needing to lift the body. They said the top side was corroded so was well worth doing the whole part rather than just the front end which had rotted at the bottom.
Haven't seen it yet but they say i'll be really happy with it and that they've given it 3 or so coats of all sorts of paints and I paid on top to have the whole chassis waxoyl'd on the outside with black and inside tubes with the clear stuff.
They told me they drilled a few small holes into the tubing of the outriggers and rear tubes and had water come out of them before they internally waxoyl'd them - so it sounds like it was worth doing!
Not got the exact bill in yet so can't give a precise breakdown of costs but I think it's around £890 all-in including the waxoyl work.
They said the bill included 7 hours labour (at £75 per hour) for the outrigger works - which is £525 (ex VAT and paint/parts) - and from their site I see waxoyling is normally around £400 (inc VAT) so I got a discount on that.
It was done in 2 days and they're based in Acton, London - so PM me if you want their details (as i'm not sure I am allow to post up garage names?)
I'm just having them recore my radiator now which is weeping a bit and then I hope to be all set for a good while now! Next job is to reveneer the walnut dash components....but that can wait for the time being.
If any of you want me to put up pics of their work i'm happy to do so once I have the car back next week.

How did they do the welding without lifting the body ? I would be very interested in seeing the photos of the repair and how they mangaged to do it... have you got it back yet ?If any of you want me to put up pics of their work i'm happy to do so once I have the car back next week.
