Hi everyone, new to this forum as I am just getting back into photography. Have bought a Nikon D40 and have taken some pictures in RAW format and cannot access them on the PC.

How can I convert them to JPEG so that they can be viewed, etc.

Thanks in advance

I expect you should have got a CD with your camera to install software on your PC.

That or use photoshop (you have to download Camera RAW too).

If you didn't get any software with the camera, then for starters try downloading Nikon View NX.

It's free and avaiable from here:

Other than that, have a look on t'internet for software like Lightroom or some of the other free tools which allow you to organise, view and edit photos. Have a look through some of the threads on here for recommendations (I use a Mac with Aperture so not sure what's available in PC Land wink ).

Thanks Guys, did not get CD with camera as it was a pre-owned one. Have already downloaded View NX but not had time to fully explore it yet.

Will try and download Lighthouse or similar until I can get Photoshop.

PCs don't come fitted with the appropriate software to view RAW files but you can download this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa...

It is only a viewer however, it will not process them to JPG.

If you don't need the benefits of shooting RAW, then you may well find it simpler to shoot in JPG for now and become more familiar with the camera and photography in general.

Instant JPEG from RAW is a pretty handy tool. And free.

Also I think FastStone should do the job for you. I assume it is OK with all Nikon RAW formats.

Quick, simple and free.

If you really want to get into the wider benefits of RAW files something like LightRoom or LightZone offers more control.
