I'm impressed by Williams effort this year. It brings a tad of variation to Formula 1 which it desperately needed.

Watch something like the Bathurst with Diablos racing 360Gts racing Vipers racing GT3s. Great racing and pretty close but entertaining. 360s could brake later but couldn't match the Diablos power.

Have a look at the 1973 Ferrari 312B3 "Spazzaneve" if you can find a picture of it. It has striking simlarities to the new Williams except that it was rubbish and never raced.

I'm thinking that they're trying to gain downforce by creating a much bigger low pressure area under the nose, sort of a ground effect tunnel at the front of the car. Can't really see it working though, which makes me think they're taking the p*ss with it. Plus it is butt ugly

Yep, that's why the noses were'lifted' all those years ago to aid the flow of air through to the area around the barge boards (forget what it's called now).

Jerez: the new Williams on top !
Impressive result by Juan Pablo Montoya [07/01/04 - 18:30]

The new FW26 starts its "career" on a high note

he new Williams FW26 was the fastest car today in Jerez. Juan Pablo Montoya is close the track record held by a McLaren MP4-19 (1'16"210) and the Colombian improves his own best time at this circuit.

This result is very encouraging for Williams, since the Grove-based team had only done a few laps since the car's launch on Monday.

Ferrari were also running today but their performance was rather discreet. McLaren will start testing tomorrow and BAR should arrive on Friday.

Jerez - 07/01/04
1. J.P. Montoya Williams-BMW FW26 1'16"630 51 laps
2. R. Zonta Toyota TF103 1'17"984 72 laps
3. J. Trulli Renault R23 1'18"092 99 laps
4. M. Gene Williams-BMW FW25 1'18"099 41 laps
5. F. Montagny Renault R23 1'18"424 90 laps
6. F. Massa Ferrari F2003-GA 1'19"002 60 laps
7. L. Badoer Ferrari F2003-GA 1'19"207 60 laps
8. O. Panis Toyota TF103 1'19"377 47 laps
