Wasn't sure if i should have put this under photography or computing.

Just curious to know why when i plug my Nikon D3000 into my MacBook (USB) it doesn't automatically detect it. I Have to use Nikon's software to transfer images. With Windows it shows normally as a external device and just drag and drop images.

Also what is the best software to view RAW file on a Mac, i have just updated to snow leopard and now my software is not compatible!

Thanks people!

To see the memory card as an external drive (and hence browse it in Finder), go to camera's Setup menu and in the USB sub-menu select Mass Storage.

Your Mac o/s includes 'Preview' (default image viewing app) which you can view NEF files with (provided Apple have released an update to include your camera of course).

what he said above about setting it to mass storage.

Personally, id use iphoto - dirt cheap to buy if you dont have it, and it supports pretty much every raw format from every camera

I used to use it to manage my photos, but now i use aperture as i like the extra features.

Perfect thanks guys! Just the help I needed!

I was using Aperture, but after upgrading to Snow Leopard it doesn't open it! Oh well, back to Iphoto!

Just tried using Iphoto, and it says the .NEF file is unrecognised...

Any ideas?

Possibly

The NEF format (like all RAWs, I believe) will be specific to the camera type/model. So make sure your software has all its latest updates to be able to read the latest model's NEFs.

In a perfect world all RAW files would be the same. Unfortunately they're not frown

Whether this is 'ongoing product improvement' or simply a stunt to sell software, I'm not sure. Probably both.

But I do like the way you had a system that worked perfectly, and then upgraded it so that it didn't work any more hehe
