Hi all,
New Porsche owner to the forum, been highly recommended by 'Domster'. I cuerrently drive a great 964 C2 but its days are numbered now I can afford a LHD T2/993 - apart from the obvious (one more boring but more reliable etc)has anyone with experience of both got any pointers/know any nice ones for sale at sensible money?
Cheers
ps: Dom, don't need your views, hear them every other day anyway ;-)

Sorry about the banter people kept on pestering me at work. Of all things.... Anyway see below:
Scott, I like Dom will bore you to death on this subject (search for T2 in previous posts, Test Drives and new Boxster owner, or something similar). So objectively these are my thoughts:
T2
1) First thing to say is you are in a win-win situation. Both are very good cars. Your difficulty is choosing which of the cars’ features you like the most.
2) Ignore what people say about the T2 being difficult to drive or Turbo lag verging on the dangerous. It’s utter toss. The T2 is an absolute doddle to drive and off boost your gran could drive it. Boost is very noticeable because it puts a smile on your face and is directly proprosional to your right foot i.e. it’s not binary as people would have you believe. If you have ever driven a cosworth you’ll know what bad boost maners are, and this car doesn’t have any.
3) The T2 is one of the best looking 911 ever made IMO
4) It has a lot of things you probably end up upgrading anyway i.e. brake's and suspension.
5) I personally like the slight retro feel to the car, makes me think I’m driving somesort of sporting classic (but a reliable one).
6) The T2 is very rare and even 996 Turbo owners find it difficult to look down their noses at you
7) Both the T2’s (3.3/3.6) have the latter dual mass fly wheel (which is as reliable as the 993’s).
8) Close to zero depreciation (wrt to time).
9) Oh, and the published 0-62 times are very conservative. Look at auto tests from the media when they were released e.g. 3.3 T2 quoted at 5.0secs, 3 German car magazines independently tested low 4.7s/high 4.6s and that’s to 62mph (100kph) not 60mph
993
1) The 993 is a ‘better/modern’ car.
2) It’s cheaper to service.
3) It is very well balanced and pulls very hard in every gear.
4) It’s common.
5) You will get beaten by a TVR
6) To many it’s the best 911 ever made.
7) Higher depreciation
I would, regardless from where you buy have an independent inspection carried out. Even respected independents sell cars with faults. You are almost guaranteed to save the money you paid for the inspection (assuming you’d be happy with the car if it were sorted).
Very biased opinion, and more than happy to take you for a drive… Oh and I think the question you should probably be asking is Turbo 2 or 964 RS. Consider the T2 as the practical car and the RS a play thing

Cheers UV,
Have to admit, the 993 route is looking more promising currently (slightly cheaper and having just bought another house cash will be a tad tight for amonth or two). Agree totally with your points, the sort of thing I expected. Which T2 do you own - 3.3 or 3.6?
I used to have a cosworth at 300bhp so understand exactly what you mean regarding lag, had a 944 turbo too which was marginally better, guess the extra engine size gives you more torque at all times hence making it more drivable?
Where are you based? If it was convenient at some time it would be great to have a look at one properly in the flesh (not under the beady eye of a sales chap) to check out all the bits that need inspecting. I'm guessing that bodywork wise it's the same stuff as a normal 964 (I'm pretty happy looking over them) - just the specific turbo bits really.
Wouldn't mind being beaten by TVR drivers, I used to have a Griffith (kept for 2 months as it was the most offensive piece of sh*t I've ever been handed the keys to - oops, that'll upset 'the other half' who swear by them and I certainly don't want to get into a TVR vs Porker chat ) and know that while they may be quicker, there's far more to a car than a big engine - otherwise we'd all drive dragsters.
Cheers
