Nikon D70. What next...

Fixed all the shortcomings I found in the D70. Then realised how I had shortcomings in all the glass!! Nikon Acquisition Syndrome at its best.
If it were today I'd look at:
D3 (Secondhand at less than 2.5 would be nice)
D700
D300
....in that order.
But depends what you want to do with it!

I too upgraded from D70 to D300 almost 2 years ago now, and haven't looked back. Had to use the D70 last weekend as I'd got muck on my sensor, still a great camera but not a patch on the D300.
I'd probably echo beano's recommendation although personnaly I couldn't go for the D3 - depends on yer piggy bank
I don't think the D90 would really give you much more than you already have, yes got new features, newer fasted etc, but I think the D300 would be a step change for you

Agreed. But having used all three - D70, D200 and D300 - the 'step change' part IMHO is from D70 to D200. I can switch from D200 to D300 and back and barely notice the difference, whilst the D70 in comparison was prehistoric.And since the D200 is now discontinued the body is half the price of a D300, which leaves room for a decent lens... just a thought!

Nikon are good, but all said and done, having used 5D Mk2, 20D and 30D (the 350/450 Canon stuff isn't as good imho), they are better than the higher end Nikon stuff like D200/300 (not used the £££ Nikon stuff though)
I think the 7D is worth a punt anyway
PS, I currently have a D70S and having used the cameras above lots the Canon feels to be the way to go for that 'mid-high' kinda spec camera... and from what I have read of past Canon strategy they might be semi-sensible money earlier next year
I certainly wouldn't buy the next Nikon up as they just don't feel THAT much better for the money.

Went from D70S to D200, the difference is night and day.
I really liked the 70S, but now I adore my 200 and cant see a need to buy a better body for my needs for a good few years yet.
As others have said, a 200 is good value now, and would leave more dollar for glass too.

D300 is a great camera. Used one a fair bit, LOTS of buttons and switches but it gets the job done,great IQ and perfomance, nice viewfinder & screen.
40D I think is/was enough of the D300 to compete but a lot cheaper.
Probelm with the D300 is its finished, end of line, if you want one you have to grab one very quicly, the D300s is coming out with very minor changes likely to pin the price up a bit more.

Nice to have buttons direct to things like white balance/colour temp scrolling and so on, which even on the 5D Canon Mk2 are in a sub-menu. Often it's the difference between getting a good shot or not. That said, you can just shoot raw but it gets silly shooting raw all day just so you can bring back hastily setup shots (imho)
I'd certainly say go a 'step up' though. Just sitting here now looking at my D70S, and it does the job, but the ease of access to what I see as core settings is just slow vs the D200/5D and even 30D range of cameras.
