I've just seen that only Euro C5s have a speedo calibrated all the way up to 300mph, US cars finishing at 200 mph. Can other owners confirm or deny? Presumably Canada must have a similar issue?

Yep, the Euro/RoW cars have 300 k/mph speedos, the Americans only 200. Have a look at Nige's US spec Z06 to see the difference. I think the Canadians have 300 too.

That is a problem I am about to encounter. I have just got all the HUD equipment to add to my '98 and a guy from the states is sending me over a HUD enabled cluster. I'm wondering whether this is going to cause conflicts when I plug it all in having a 200mph speedo and my original being 300.....Paul.

On a C5 Corvette, I thought it was possible to select MPH or KMH increments?

I am importing a new C5 from Germany early this year, and this was one of my questions.

I believe the needle just "moves" to the correct speed when you select either MPH or KMH from the DIC (driver information centre).

???

I could be wrong!

Yes you can select "Metric" or "English" measurements by a single button push and the speedo will alter accordingly. However the original question referred to the markings on the analogue speedo display. The US models have a speedometer dial that is marked from 0 to 200 whereas the export models have one that goes from 0 to 300 - which is a damn sight harder to read due to the small gaps between the numbers and that's why I must have been speeding ossifer !

Both speedos work in E and M modes but the US models will run out of needle travel a long time before they run out of power when the display is working in metric as 200kph equates to about 125mph.

I believe there is a lot of flexibility regarding how the instrument cluster is programmed. For instance, the car can either default to miles or km when it's switched on, depending on how it's set. Bear in mind that mine is a Euro car and they're all built the same but were first sold in different countries. When the ignition is turned on mine always shows km on the odometer, switching to miles when the engine is started. To make any changes the catch is finding anyone who a) has the equipment and b) knows what they are doing! Personally I would hesitate to touch the electrics in the dash of these cars even though it's an area I'm reasonably familiar with.

Can you let me know what it takes to import a German C5 in terms of import duty, VAT, registering and SVA please? I've always wondered as my Z28 came from Germany via American Dreams who imports his cars from Germany (complete with German dip headlamps) and I've often thought this might be a cheaper way to buy one.

I know on the Z06 that I can get a recalibrated Z06 instrument cluster from Canada which is 300, not 200. However the HUD is 200 only regardless of which year / model etc. The HUD is the same in the Coupe, Convertible, Z06 for all years unless anyone knows different.
