£500 sounds pretty reasonable actually, the premium seems to go right down after your first accident free year.

When I had my standard S1 aged 28, I was paying £380 pa, with unlimited mileage. Granted that was some 6 years ago, but I'd expect to pay alot less than £500 for a standard S1.
I pay £660 pa on a Honda'd S1, with unlimited mileage, so I think that's a tad expensive to be honest. Post code and limiting mileage will play it's part, along with experience.
I know that some insurers are loading the policy for new ownwers in the first year, as a direct result of teh sheer number of total losses that they're seeing.
Try some of the specilaist insurers via Seloc as Bandit suggests.

I've just had a quote with Richard Egger for £570ish. I don't think it is bad really and is based on:
I have heard better for 100% standard cars (but not many are) and people in other parts of the country. A Manchester postcode is a killer for me.
- 30 year old (me - not the car obviously)
- 6,000 miles per year
- 6 years no claims (2 of which are on the Elise)
- Standard S1 apart from induction and exhaust upgrades
- SP30 last year

Just gone with competition car insurance. Notts postcode kept on driveway unlimitedmiles 28 years old not had a year with the car elise s 6years ncb all in at £420 including 4 free trackdays. Seems very reasonable indeed and makes your quotes seem a little on the high side. Only a £500 excess as well
