In January i am going to buy a 5d mk2 and would like to purchase a lense at the same time.

Has anyone had any experience of the above lens?

I have one on my D300, it's pretty much been glued to the body since I bought it

50-150 f2.8 is also worth a look if you dont fancy the 70-200 price tag

The new HSM version or the old non HSM?

The new HSM is supposed to be stellar. The old one is OK but not a patch on the canon AFIK.

Canon have just started bundling the 24-70 f2.8 with the 5d mkII so it might not be that much more expensive to get the L glass, which will hold it's value much better if you ever decide to sell on.

I have the older non-HSM Sigma, it's a nice lens but the zoom twist action is quite stiff, and it is fairly slow and noisy to focus. The Sigma HSM motor (as in the 10-20) would make it much better.

However if you can stretch to the Canon 24-70 2.8L then I would do as it should be a lovely piece of kit.

Arrrgh , I've saved up to buy the Canon lens - then talked myself out of it , now all I see is people saying how good it is !!!! I mean £1000 is a lot of folding , is it soo much better than the sigma ?

Sorry for rant I'm in buyers turmoil

I haven't directly used the 24-70L

However, I have used both the Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM, and the Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS USM, and in that instance yes the Canon is indeed worth the extra money.

I have the lens and I use it more than my other 3 lenses (zoom, wide angle, kit) put together.

Only downside is that it's a little weighty compared to my kit lens (17-85).

Got the non USM version, and it does the job nicely. Can't compare it to anything else though as I've never used anything else.

My only issue is that 24mm is not wide enough for some of my stuff, so 10-20 will be bought next year to compliment it.

The new HSM one is completely different to the old one (and much more money), this review reckons its better than the L equiv http://www.lenstip.com/172.11-Lens_review-Sigma_24...

Just remembered a point worth mentioning; the non-HSM version of this is 82mm filter thread which is uncommon and pricey. Believe the later, HSM version reverts to 77mm

Yup, I have the HSM version and used to use it a lot for the likes of BTCC, PCC gridwalks and paddock areas and have my other body running either 70-200mm or 75-300mm...until picking up the 10-20mm wide angle the 24-70mm Sigma was always on the spare body...
