We moved in to a renovated house around 3 years ago. Not long after there was a loud creak + bang while in bed and the bed dropped in one corner (sadly not during rumpy-pumpy...).

I just dropped a long section of wood under the bed legs at the head of the bed and thought nothing more of the hole.

We're now looking to sell the house, so I thought I'd take a look. Turns out to be another dodgy job by the cowboys who renovated the house. They installed some new plumbing, and to do this cut a section of floorboards up. Approx 20cm long, 2 floorboards, up to the wall. They then only screwed these floorboards in to a joist, 20cm from the wall - cantilevered style. Needless to say, the cantilever was not sufficient, and broke.

Any ideas on fixing...? I thought of just hiding it all under a thin steel plate, but then I'm no better than them, and where do I get one!!!?

How about screwing some batten across where the floorboard ends. That is; screw through the adjacent boards from above, with the batten below the board.

Photo please!

Ideally you need to make good, otherwise your conscience won't like you...

Happy to give free advice on what needs to be done to rectify the problem.

Can you give the dimensions of the room, the way the joists run, the size of the joists and the centres...

As you can see the boards are butting up against some brickwork in the wall (L shaped exterior wall at that point)

I think due to the small size of the damaged area, the batten underneath seems a logical and simple solution, thanks thumbup

I've use the battening technique a couple of times where people had done similar to the boards in my flat. No problems so far, one of them has a rear sofa leg on it and is now as solid as the correctly laid boards.

Yep, run a batten across under where the carpet gripper would run, and screwed firmly to the floorboards on each side.
