longevity of 993 t4 turbos?
Discussion
Dunno - long time though. I remember someone had to replace theirs at about 165K miles. Have a look on the rennlist archives.
BUT it mainly depends on how they where used. One great thing about the 993TT is that even if the engine is switch off they is a separete oil pool system to run the turbo's. So if they're still spinning when the engine is turned off - it stops them running dry and keeps them relative cool.
Turbo Technics reconidition T2 turbo's at a fraction of the price of new ones - I imagin when there are some 993TT need doing (not for a while yet) they may start doing these.
That'll be 3K at an official porsche center and half that at a specialist I would of thought no?

Cheers bosshog. I have faith in Porsche engineering myself, but just flagging a concern over some t4 owners comments I've read. Some were worried about using them everyday due to turbo wear and replacement costs.
One other little concern I have too is the gearbox. I know your not supposed to nail the throttle in first as the pinion can't take too much torque. Porsche strengthened the gerbox in 1997, so I'm assuming older cars will be at some risk to failure, to a used purchaser's point of view. A replacement must cost a small fortune! Any comments on this?

As far as the turbos' go - I don;t think is very common at all. I've only heard of one case. Perhaps call up some specialist and ask if they every do much work in this area. Personally I find the whole point of 993TT is the fact you can use it as an everyday car. If it was just for the weekend then a more race-car experience would of been sort out (ie 993 RS or GT2 - if only..). I wouldn't worry about it.
I've heard about the 1st gear issue, and there is a test, but it escapes me how to perform it (I read how to do it on the web somewhere). Drive the car, if 3rd to 1st change is smooth and obviously 1st to 2nd is good then I wouldn't worry about it. I must admit I never floor it in 1st - I'd simply hit the rev limiter before my brain would even begin to register that I need to change gear v.v.quick - 2nd gear is bad enough.....
