Hi all, if I'm going to make this photography thing a real hobby I want to be able to host my pictures on something other than flickr or photobucket!

I just want something very simple which I can have a few different galleries for different events/types of photos.

Am looking to purchase a mac shortly and have seen other peoples websites which seem to have a dedicated mac space, is this something that needs to be paid for separately or should I simply look to buy a url and host that way?

I'm a bit of a novice too but hope to get this sorted...*ny hints/tips?

Woza.

Edit: website I was referring to was hosted at web.me.com anyone else use this?

I'd get a bit of mac space , buy a cheap URL from somone like www.easily.co.uk and then point the URL at the webspace. If you want a dedicated e mail address, you can buy that at the same time from easily (ie woza@woza.com). It aint expensive any more (When I bought my domain name it was £360 a year! - .co.uk are now under a fiver)

ETA - Easily will sell you some webspace too... but I think mac will be cheaper.

Hmmmm... then you might consider Easilly for domain, hosting and e mail if required... that lot together would be less than £59

Scott, really like your layout.

This is exactly what im looking to do!

Clickpic says you can only have 100 images though if you have the £35 tariff, is there a way around this?

Yes, I'd be careful...it's easy to build up a big site - I now have over 16000 files on my site! (gulp).

Thanks

I am afraid not. You upload the images into a directory so the number is capped.

Or Photium; here's mine.

Again, because it's template-based, sites have a similar look and feel. A whole load of new templates added recently though. I've been very pleased with the facilities and the support.

Yes, it's all a little daunting at first, but gets more "logical" with use. Initially, I just looked for a suitable colour on one of the "base" templates and then copied the rgb code into mine. Good luck with it ...

Smugmug isn't free - it's $40/year for unlimited storage and it's very good. I used to use them but switched over to Zenfolio which is also $40/year for unlimited storage but looks prettier and the admin interface is better. If you want to join Zenfiolio, PM me and I can give you a referral code.

ETA I've got 2 Zenfolio sites if you want to see what it looks like and the different ways you can set up your galleries:

I've just recently sorted out some new webspace for myself.

In the end went with GoDaddy. Godaddy

I've opted to go with their deluxe plan - 150Gb of storage and 1500Gb/month worth of transfer. All for about £50 which I thought was a bloody good deal.

Awaits someone to point out that I'm getting over charged. smile

I went with 3ix as I don't need anything flash/fancy or massive in terms of bandwidth or webspace. I get 40Gb of space and 100Gb of bandwidth for £8.50 a year. I just wanted something cheap to set my site up on. Been OK and stable so far. Their cheapest unlimited Bandwidth package comes in at £2/month.

I use Jalbum (for my galleries) which scales the size of my images right down, helping preserve my limited space.

I bought my name from heartinternet.co.uk for about £6 for 2 years.

Took a free template from the net (to keep costs down) and customized to my liking.

Does me fine for now.

Sure: It's here

I think it will always be a work in progress as I always seem to be changing the site, rather than adding to it.

It's nothing brilliant but I did it all myself, so I'm chuffed with it.

Thanks for asking,
Scott
