Hi all,

I have a 2005 Audi TT QS240, it has recently started putting the front left brake on when going round a right hand bend. It doesn't come on alot and doesn't really pull just makes a nasty sound as I think it comes on then goes off then on then off and so on. However, if I turn the ESP off it doesn't do it. Any ideas if this could be something as simple and cheap as a sensor needing to be replaced or something more serious and pricey?

Cheers,

HF

Sounds like the ESP thinks your going to loose control, could be a sensor I reckon

Yeah thats what I'm thinking (although I am by no means an expert) and just to clarify it does this whilst going at 30mph around motorway roundabouts so hardly driving like a nutter.

Your definatly having an ESP event.

The question is, and only you the drive can really answer this. Are you on the limit of grip when this happens.??

If so then thats the ESP doing what it should do to prevent you loosing the car, it is pretty easy to go a bit faster with the ESP turned off, modulating the throttle to balance the rear end. So if your finding the ESP intrusive when you feel like some press on driving, I'd say turn it off. However, always turn it back on afterward. Its might be easy to play with the car on the throttle when your committed and trying, but if your forced to swerve round and obstacle or have to do some emergency braking mid corner, then you'll be lucky to save it yourself and be glad the ESP is there.

If your not at the limit of grip when the ESP event occurs, or if doesn't happen at the same speed turning the other way, there is a fault with the ESP. It shouldnt activate in that way unless the rear end is starting to come round, Most of the sensors will put the warning light on long before you notice anything, but steering angle sensors slightly out due to poor wheel alignment can cause this type of problem whithout be enough out of spec to show up the warning.

Have you kerbed it, or had the wheel alignment done, or the steering wheel off recently.????

It does it at relatively low speeds, nowhere near the limits of the grip, also the ESP light doesn't come on when it does it, and the brake will just comes on and off really quickly, repeatedly until I straighten out, but when I turn off the ESP it doesn't do it, something I forgot to mention is that it will only do it if there is no one in the passenger seat which makes it even more bizarre, I did take it to an independent garage who plugged the laptop in and VAGCOM didn't come up with any errors, the guy took it out and managed to replicate it but said he'd need it in for possibly as much as 2 days to find the fault, which obviously would be very costly labour-wise, so I may just take it to audi and get them to look at it as they may find the fault faster. What do you think?

And no its not been Kerbed, had the wheels aligned or had the steering wheel off, it just one day started doing it :S

Thanks alot for the replies,

Cheers,

HF

Will be very difficult to diagnose regardless who does it, if it wont log a code. With the main dealer 5051, we cant look at ABS/ESP MVB's over 25mph for gay Audi safety reasons. VAGCOM might not have this, so could for once be better. The Idea method, would be looking at the MVB's for the various ESP sensors while driving the car and replicating the fault.

TBH will probably come down to trial and error replacing sensors to see if you get a fix.

Normally I would say check teh wheel speed sensors adn there wiring first, but in this case I think You can rule out wheel speed sensors as you don't get the fault with ESP off, which suggests can only be dedicated ESP sensors or there associated wiring causing the fault.

There are 4 sensors Steering angle, long and Lat accelerometers and brake fluid pressure sensor.

If it were mine, I'd try a steering angle sensor first, failing that the lateral accelerometer.

Hi. I did, from memory (it was a looong time ago now!) it was the ABS sensor. Hopefully that helps!

Hi guys I've just bought an 2003 8n TT roadster & im pulling my hair out with exactly same problem with n/s/f wheel.
So was it definitely an Abs sensor?

Ok so fitted the n/s/f abs sensor yesterday & ive used the car twice so far, at the moment no esp light & no abs being applied on that wheel.
I will keep close eye on it but at the moment all seems good so happy days!
Thanks guys!
