Lucas pattern parts

Hi there,

I was just wondering if all new Lucas brand dizzy caps and rotor arms are still manufactured with the part numbers stamped on them.

I have just bought said parts in Lucas boxes, but they don't have the old stamps on them and differ slightly in other respects.

Now I know that lots of manufacturing is being shipped to the far east, so have they just retooled and not bothered with the part numbers, or have I been sold 3rd party parts in a Lucas box.

Don't know where they are made but the "genuine" Lucas rotor arm I got from ebay came in a pukka Lucas box but had no markings on the part itself. It works fine though!

I think that the original Lucas parts will have Lucas stamped on them which are a lot more expensive than the newer Lucas parts. I think that the brand name has been sold on, hence the change.

Mine looks like the one in the link, and came in the same type of box.

After doing some more searching I found the RPI are selling what look like the originals for £55, which is a little steep for a cap and arm, but if you want it to be original I guess you have to pay.

I unwittingly tried to go with non-Lucas parts. After a few k miles, the enging wouldn't start the morning I was due to go in for a service. Flatbed in, and £250 later, it turned out to be the rotor arm.

£55 sounds cheap. Stick to the originals. Matt (Silverstone Performance) says he has come across this before - TVRs don't like non-Lucas rotor arms.

I think that the point is that we have bought Lucas parts, they are just not made using the original tooling. Hence the lack of number stamps.

I work in an industry that is currently looking at shipping molding tooling to China and it just is not worth it. It is far cheaper to have a new tool made in China and not pay the import duty, plus you have a tool which is back at the start of its life. When Lucas re-manufactures the tooling they probably do a few mods (much like we have), eliminating cost etc. This leaves us with the product that is now being sold as Lucas.

The NOS parts being sold by RPI are just that 'NOS', once they are gone they are gone.

I'll see how I get on with the new ones, but in the future if people go the NOS route I can see prices reflecting this. It could be the S type front indicator lens situation all over.
