I know there are fixes available but if I buy a C5, is there a point when they fixed this problem. I'm looking at a Sept 2001 on model.

Hi Wayne, check out www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/

there are two C5 forums: tech discussion and mods. These forums are pretty active & worth checking out regularly.

You keeping that wicked looking camaro as well as the vette?

Thanks for the link. I'll have a look at those.
Woh! New C6 photos, haven't seen these before. Looks good!

Yes, I'm keeping the Zed as I love it too much and I have to have 4 seats. In a way, a C5 is a hopelessly selfish indulgence as I have my 3 year old daughter every weekend so couldn't use it then. Mere details!

My gf's Astra will probably be going and she'll take over the reins of the Camaro for as long as she can stand me criticising her not washing and polishing it!

Mind you, I have to get a wedding out of the way first and I'm still hoping the advent of the C6 will reduce prices as I'd like a Z06 and the cheapest one I can find is £36k.

I may also wait and see if the Cadillac CTS-V drops in price as the combination of 5 seats and a Z06 engine is an appealing proposition for me.

My main dilemma is I need a double garage but if I buy a house with a double garage, I can't afford two cars. Can I bear to leave one outside?

Yes a really big problem for certain runs of C5's.

Fortunately, our friends on the C5 sections of many other Corvette sites have posted all the info on it. I understand that those who have had the problem were much troubled by it.

I don't have very much to add, since I have a C4, and havent read the stuff on the lock problem. But all you need is at those links.

And another followup on the new information about the C6 (check after midnight, their time):

I've never had the problem and haven't heard of it in any european cars so far. The Column Lock Bypass kit is available for about $50 if not less nowadays if you want complete peace of mind. I think GM resolved the problem for the 2002MY onwards automatics by removing the locking pin in the column lock device (!) but left it in for the manual cars.

I can hear the little motor driving the pin into place every time I switch off and it has worked fine so far [author touches wood quietly]. From what I've read the good old fashioned technique of jiggling key and wheel until it frees up works just as well on the new cars as with the manual column locks of the seventies.

What's car crime like where you live? If you have adequate security on your car (and to a certain degree, home), then there is nothing to worry about, even if car crime is high.
