Reminds me of a fellow Pistonhead who was once heard to say that 'Coulthard will never win the World Championship, as long as he has a hole in his @rse'..!
I hear McDonalds are recruiting........

if dc is only average i hate to think what that makes the rest of us
Ah, the context I was using 'average' for was in the F1 areana. It has to be said he has made some of the best machinery look average, does that make him below average amongst his peers, possibily.
I do not reside under the illusion that I or any mere mortal could even get a racing tuscan around the track let alone a F1 car, then again nor am I/we paid x million pa to do so .
To say he has under-achieved in his F1 career, given the machinery to hand, is a fair comment IMHO.

A little hard on DC, all this. 60 podiums deserve a little respect (64% of his finishes), and for a driver approaching the end of a distinguished career he does pretty well.
MS and DC are just two of the older drivers who haven't taken to single lap qualifying - an entirely new ballgame for them - and it has affected their results.
I don't 'support' any particular driver - I admire them all, and prefer to think well of them.

Yes but if all the British public get behind him and support him he'll win it in 2004!

Now THAT'S funny!!!!
Coulthard has had some of the World Title wining machinery underneath him for a number of years and has not pulled a championship out of the bag. Yes, Hakkinen and now Raikkonen have the majority of the team around them. However, if DC was a world class driver he would have the team based around him and have a couple of titles in the bank before now.
He's dire and I really don't understand why Ron Dennis has updated his contract for the last three years. He's too slow (in F1 terms) and his seat should have been given up for someone who could have given his team-mates a harder time long before now.

Mainly my thoughts too
DC and MS have been my favorite drivers for a long time....and I've always had a few I least like. However, I enjoy watching them all
To be fair to DC (and I'm no fan), he has lost an awful number of races to mechanical failure. In fact, every time he storms off into the lead, you can pretty much guarantee that he'll be parked up in 10 laps.
From recent memory:
- Brazil '03: A far more intelligent drive than either Raikonen or Montoya (who both cooked their tyres). Race in the bag until Alonso goes psycho while DC pits.
- Malaysia '03: Steams away, engine packs up, 10 points lost.
- France (a couple of years back): A second a lap quicker than Schumacher and Hakkinen. Electrics fail. Parks up.
And there have been many more.
Still think he's a knob, though...

I think DC is a better than average driver, to achieve the number of podiums he has is pretty good. When you are the number two driver (acknowledged or not) the car will be less well set up then the number one car, so less chance of winning championships. I can also think of another British driver who never won a world championship but was certainly in the top three drivers of his era....Stirling Moss, nobody can claim he was an average driver.

I belive the phrase was "couldn't drive a greasy stick up a dogs @rse"
David Coulthard has been given the opportunity to drive in a couple of the best teams in F1 and done very little with it.I find him about as interesting as a radish and always said he would never amount to anything. I hold Frentzen in higher regard, and that is saying something.
All IMHO ofcourse, so sorry DC fans if there are any.
But he is the pile of porrigde that drove a McLaren.
