Guys I am considering buying the car below if I can negotiate a good price. Wondered if the PH collective could give me their views on what it may cost to bring up to A1 condition I have spoken to the dealer and it seems an honest description of the vehicle. The car has an MOT and as far as I know the chassis/outriggers are fine.

I know it's a bit like how longs is a peice of string, BUT are the follwing roughly what you might pay for replacements:

Dash re-veneered £150?
Carpets £200-250?
Rear screen ?
Re spray £1000-1500

I would be looking at preparing the car myself for the respray to save on hte £££'s. Obviously having owned a TVR before I know there's no such thing as a "cheap, good one" but if the mechanicals are ok I would be prepared to take on rest.

Considering having the car looked over by some like Rob Inglby as the dealer is a 400 mile round trip for me, I don't suppose anyone on here knows the car?

I know that if I buy the car I will get carried away with things and replace alot more than I have listed here, but if it's a sound car to start I am in it for the long haul!

Any other advice greatly received

Thanks H

Well I just got quotes for most of these things for a similar reason, but not doing anything myself...

David Gerald
to replace the dash panels in a V8S would be £647.00 plus VAT
To Replace carpets in a V8S ( standard quality carpets) £1500.00 plus VAT
Rear screen approx £250

First Glass Automotive Glazing
Front screen if delaminated £430 plus VAT

Option 1
Bonnet respray £1000 plus VAT (depending on condition of paintwork)(Option 1)
Full respray £3500 (Option 1)

Hope that helps

It seems a very low price, very difficult to gauge condition.

I had a rear screen about 18 months ago for just over £100, far better quality than the original (thicker and softer).

Godd luck, they are tremendous carssmile

I have been quoted £200 for a bonnet respray - is that not about right?

That car is too cheap - must be something wrong with it. I dont believe a V8S with 23k on the clock would be "open to offers" with a list price of just £5k.

I would take a car mechanic (preferably an S nut) to see it again if you are serious.

Thanks for the replies guys. Guess it needs some more thought/homework and closer inspection. Shame it so far away from, looks like I might have to take a trip to Yorkshire!

btw Just noticed the TVR club sticker on the inside of the windscreen, will take a look at the club website.

Any recommendations for a good "S nut" mechanic that carries out inspections?

Hi Howard,

Here are a few personal opinions to chew over...

'a good price'. At £5k, I reckon that's a good price for any V8S in decent running order with a full MOT... you WILL make sure you get a new MOT, won't you?!

The problems as described are all (a) cosmetic and (b) indicative of long periods of lack of use, possibly stored outside. This ties up with the low mileage, which isn't entirely a good thing. If the history shows a long idle period followed by recent regular use, all well and good. If however it has been little used until now, expect electrical problems due to poor connections, and possible problems with brake and clutch hydraulics. Don't assume low mileage means good chassis either, although there's a reasonable correlation there.

If you want a car for 'go' this could be it - forget about the cosmetics and enjoy the drive! If you want a car for 'show', you may be better off in the long run spending a little more on a higher mileage example in better cosmetic condition, and saving on the bills.

Ultimately, think "what do I really want it for?" and "how much can I afford to spend now, and in future, on it?" Then look at it with an open mind, drive it, and see if it feels right

Oh, sod it, just buy the damn thing and have fun!!

Great colour, by the way....

Got to agree with "Ragtop" Buy it, spend first year sorting mechanically (it will undoubtable need things doing)then if still got the bug blow your money on the cosmetic things like paint and trim !

I had planned on getting it done at that garage but the main worry for me is the finish.
This is the company who quoted £200 for the bonnet:
http://www.dunwellcoachworks.co.uk/
The guy reckoned I would not see any evidence of a respray and they use the best lacquer etc
I am having second thoughts now.

Howard

I'm in Yorkshire & would be quite happy to go and have a look at it for you - at the very least to get 'up close' and check out the usual areas - outriggers, etc.

I have an S3 so am not so clued up on the V8 engine - but I could still check if it's clean, etc.

I think the dealer is quite reputable, as I know at least 2 guys in the Sprint Championship who carry the website address on their cars (I can't see them advertising someone who they don't rate).

PM me with your mobile and I can take a list of things you want checking as well.

At the same time I can speak to a very godd friend of mine who is a car sprayer and see whether he can provide some quotes for you - at least then you can have more of an idea before you commit to buy.
