Ok, it seems the time has come for me to part company with my MGF. I won't say a bad word against the car, its looked after me very well, and since my previous car was a G reg Astra 1.2 enough said. Anyways having lost a bundle of beer tokens in owning the MG for a year (about 6k) I'm keen to get a motor that will hang onto its value a little better given that imminent house purchase rears its head which might involve selling the newly aquired car altogether within 6 months. So whats good at holding its value, AND more fund to drive than an MGF.... (I'm waiting for the jokes...)

not bad so far, like the texas long horns. nobodys said miss daisy yet either. Ted's suggestion of a 2CV would save me losing money, they only cost 200 quid and use about that much petrol a year.... I might die driving it though (of boredom? - actually I guess they are a white knouckle ride...)

I've got a Griffith and bought the elise off a friend who needed to get rid of it quickly.I've had a bit of fun with it but the insurance is due to be renewed. Its really quick (don't know if you know the 111s modifications?) done only 2800 miles, 99T. Absolute bargain at £20,000. But I would say that wouldn't I. Email me if you're interested. caw@starsupply.co.uk

- fourwheeldrift - you'd need a stanna to get up the stairs in that rickety looking house behind your ceby in that photo... As for buying the elise, hmmm nope 111S sure is nice, but well I'm too damn big for the F, not crushing myself into an Elise! Tiv is more likely, though I hanker after an Esprit but I hear they aren't so big on the inside. M-Coupe looks good s/h but haven't sat in one yet. Old 911 (964 993 if I can find one cheap enough in good nick) also on the cards...

thats not fair - I want to see the house picture!!!! er..think an M coupe will lose value a fair bit. The only way to get fun and not lose too much dough is to buy old....old 911 maybe or esprit turbo could be good bet or a HUGE yank thing - say an old firebird. get a mint one for 2 grand and drive like a redneck...cool!

If you want a hulking great yank tank it has to be a Dodge Charger, remeber the General Lee in the Dukes of Hazzard and the bad guys black car in Bullitt? Try to find the RT model and you will get a 440BHP 2 ton monster that can out accelerate a Porker even though it only has a 3 speed auto box!!! The only thing loud enough and bad enough that gets close to a TVR Oh and you can pick a good one up for 7K!!!! Edited by fourwheeldrift on Thursday 15th February 19:08

I always liked those. Shame they won't go around corners though. Were they fitted with steering wheels or a tiller?

That's probably why there's only 5 roundabouts in the USA !

I thought you had to apply by post to get permission to go round corners in the US ;-) No yank tank for me, Esprit is very high on the list - nice guide to buying one in EVO this month too.. Night - do you really think it would hold its value - I mean Esprits aren't exactly the kind of car you think of holding its value as it gets older... Still a GT3 / S4S or a later V8 (i wish!) certainly appeals if I could find one for the right money, loads more looks than an old 911!!! Thought about a chimp too but theres just soooo many about now..

Go for it. I'm rather partial to Esprits and you don't see many around.

Buy one of the ex-Academy Caterham 7s. There's no market for them, so as long as you find one that hasn't been crashed, you'll be able to beat the seller down and get a car that will probably not lose significant value for the next 10 years. I'd reckon you could pick one up for £8000 or so. Speaking from experience of selling one of the '96 Top Gear cars (basically the same thing..), here.

Caterham 7... Fine If I had time/space/money to run two cars... Think the esprit is more practical for my needs (not that an esprit is exactly practical!!)

Night - I understand you ahve an esprit (seen you cenverstaions on the esprit / lotus board..) Any reccommendations from your own experience / where [not!] to buy / what model / age / colour / extras to have etc.. Obviously FLSH is a must, and from the conversations around I figure buying from a dealer so I get a warranty wouldn't be a bad idea...
