i had xbox live a while ago and loved halo 3 - im not sure if my rating made me play better players, or if everyone was just getting better at it, but it got to the point where everyone was just annoyingly good and i couldnt kill anyone! whats going on!

not had xbox live for ages but gonna get it again - are there any games out now that are as good as halo? i didnt rate gears of war at all. maybe that half life is good?

CoD4 is all you'll need to play until CoD6 is out in a couple of months.

About Halo3 players being really good, I'd bet that most the players for it are american and you're always going to be at a disadvantage playing online against yanks. Halo2 was terrible for it.

I played a lot of Halo 2 and got very good at it. Halo 3 came with the 360 I got but never really played it until recently, as there were lots of other more interesting things about. What I have noticed, which is a major flaw, is the skill matching system. I played a game the other night, rumble pit, where we were all about level 7 and had played 30 odd games. A guy comes on – had played 4000+ team slayer games! But only a dozen rumble-pit games – so he was ranked in the same group as the rest of us. It wasn’t pretty…….. I don’t get why the skill levels are separate for every variation – it’s all the same game, running around shooting people on the same maps!

Also played with a mate in 2-player games the same night. We played these two guys who were BOTH called “justanotherprogamer” or similar – neither had any rankings or any game history in their profiles. Suffice to say, we got completely annihilated by them! Very odd…..

Because they generally have much faster connections.

You have to remember that the people still playing Halo 3 (2 years after it's release) are those who are pretty hardcore and play pretty seriously.

I was upto rank 20 when I last played in early '08 when I played a match a couple of weeks ago I got absolutely fking ruined, the skill level and curve of player ability has moved up alot in the last year or so.

I had a problem with my rank on Halo 3. When it first came out I played with guys who were better than me, so my rank went up high, as did theirs. I don't play with them now, but I'm stuck with my high rank, so I rank match with people a lot better than me. So I've started a new account and won't play long term with anyone on this account, so I'll get to my own level and then it'll "level out" so to speak and I should get some good close games.

Also there are some good points made by the guy above about most players now being dedicated, as it's a relativly old game. Also the yanks DO have better connections. Plus I've come across more and more people cheating using lag-switches. (i.e. when they are the host they have a little box which v briefly cuts their net connection, so they can shoot you but you can't hit them, then they re-connect and you die.)

A good way to test for bad lag on Halo 3 is to throw a grenade and see how long after you press the button the grenade actually launches from your character.

A bit off-topic, I tried playing Quake 3 online the other day, and basically I never knew people could be THAT good at anything, it was frankly one of the most frightening experiences of my life and one I wish not to repeat! COD4 hasn't moved on as much in that way, thankfully.
