Whats my next lens?
Discussion
Hi guys, Had my camera for a month odd now and I am feeling I want to get a new lens next payday.
I want todo more close up shots and some bokeh so I was thinking a 50mm.

Is this the way I want to go or am I looking for something else?
I have a Nikon D90 with kit lens atm.
Cheers,
LL

Well maybe I'd think about a 60mm micro, but what are you getting close up to?I have a Nikon D90

if you want macro, a 50mm is to short and you will be so close that you will block the light out. I use a 100mm macro and it is a great lens
How do macro lenses work as a walking about lense? can you use them as a walking about lens or are they just macro? Sorry if thats a stupid question. My old camera could handle quite upclose macro along with being a walking about camera. Not use to all these different lenses lol. Also whats the price range? Im thinking £100 pref but can go to £200 pref not.

Variable - it used to be the case that a macro lens would be designed for the specific purpose and would perform less well than a non-macro equivalent. That's not the case with the latest Nikkors though. The newest 105mm is a stunning lens, I have often used it for a general walkabout where the focal length was right, although it doesn't have the extra stops and extremely pleasing bokeh of my 85mm I would consider it for portraiture as well. The latest 60mm also shares this all-rounder quality.
I'm not sure any prime (fixed focal length) lens could be called a walk about lens. To me a walk about lens is when you only have the opportunity to take one bit of glass out with you which has to capture a variety of subjects meaning zooms.
I have used the Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF VR Macro and it's a stunning lens, however it's £600 so possibly a bit out of your budget.
Infact the only bit of glass inside your budget of £100 is the nifty 50, and this is great value for money, everyone should have one in their bag.
As for good walk about lenses, my friend has the Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm 3.5-5.6G IF-ED on his d90 and is pleased with the quality, and you don't really get much better range. Again, this is nearly £600 though so you better get saving!

So since I dont have £600 at the moment the nifty fifty is the way to go? Is the one I posted on my original post a good one/compatible with my body? Also is that the best price I can get? Need to pick up the skill of shopping for lenses!
Really this is what I am aiming for

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat11.html is your friend.
Example bokeh

Example of how shallow it can be (though focus wasn't spot on)

Yes, the lens you posted originally is compatible with your camera. If your budget is £100, then that's pretty much the only prime lens you can get, unless you want to consider old manual focus ones. For £200 there's a 35mm 1.8, if you prefer that focal length. So since I dont have £600 at the moment the nifty fifty is the way to go? Or you could get a telephoto zoom lens instead.
If you're just trying to do that heart shape bokeh thing, then I'd suggest trying it with your existing lens first.
If you want to do close up shots, then if you've got the 18-55mm lens that will allow you to get closer than either the 50mm or 35mm prime lenses will. To get even closer you'll need a proper macro lens for which you're looking at £300 or more. You could get one for less if you're willing to buy second hand.

What exactly do you want to photograph close up Lambo? There's a world of difference in taking a photo of something like a mobile phone to what 4hero does (true macro)
