I've recently bought an 52 plate S3 and the previous owner swapped the originial Audi tape head unit for a Kenwood one. Details below:

Previously - Chorus II A3 tape player
Now - Kenwood KDC 237 cd with aux input
Also, theres the same standard kit in the back as before, so no change to amp/sub. Not sure what it is but theres a box in the left hand compartment (nothing in the right one), think thats the sub?

Theres a strange buzzing noise that comes from the rear speakers, it doesn't get louder or quieter when the vol is turned up or down just a constant buzz. Its not very loud but is starting to get pretty irratating on longer journeys.

Any ideas on what it is and how to fix it? Simple instructions would be handy as i'm rubbish at electrics.

Cheers in advance.

Sounds like something similar to what I have, though I have the standard head unit in my A3. The buzz seems to come and go when I go over bumps in the road. It also seems to buzz in tune with the turbo spooling when I accelerate.

I haven't found a solution to my own problem, but seems like we are in a similar boat.

Hmmm... thats strange. Don't think mines quite the same problem - noise doesn't get louder or softer any time, when the system is on its just a constant buzz. I think it might be something to do with running the new head unit through the old amp/sub system - don't know tho.

Any ideas?

I'm betting your car had BOSE in it then. The Kenwood system wont get on with it and you'll get a noise and sometimes a popping noise.

I'd get a standard Audi headunit from a similar car and return it to stock. You can get leads etc to combat the buzz though. Have a look on Audi-Sport.net and check out the ice forume for more info.

No, don't think it is the Bose set-up.

Have posted a thread on Audi-sport, thanks.

These sort of noises are usually down to wire location, has any of the wires to and from speakers and subs been changed?

If the wires are not run in the correct location for the car you get interference on the wires from the mechanicals that may or may not vary.

I would get an car audio specialist to look at it and check the wire layout.

Could be interferance, as suggested. This is often caused by a bad earth. This would normally follow engine revs.
Without seeing it, its difficult, but it could also be down to a faulty head unit.
