Peugeot 106 GTI or Citroen Saxo VTS ?

I’m thinking about buying New car- it hale to be quick, 3dr hatchback.
At the moment I hesitate between Peugeot 106 GTI and Citroen Saxo VTS.

What’s your opinion? Maybe something else in similar price range?

They are almost identical. The pug is less chavvy though.

Also look at:

Ford Puma 1.7 VCT - Better looking than the french, much better build quality. Great engine, similar performance and handling.

Fiesta Zetec S - As above but without the 1.7 Variable cam timing engine.

More 'drive' focussed and likely to keep their money well.

Out of the two I've always prefered the Pug over the Citroen.

At the age they will be now it is all down to condition and price.
The setup of both is all but identical.

Just get the best condition you can find for the budget

My money would go on a 6 speed Lupo Gti, although they are, perhaps, a little more expensive.

Failing that, I'd go for a 106Gti or, better still, a Rallye. Not fussed in the VTS as every chav seemed to have one a few years back.

Not round these parts. Every GTI and Rallye is driven around in 2nd gear at all times

I would say 106 (have a quicksilver myself). But the GTI does have a chavvy image... infact the VTS is worse... You ask a GTI owner and it's better, you ask a VTS owner and they will say the same.

There isn't a great deal between them although I think the GTI is a little quicker and better handling on track. After saying that - get an s2 Rallye (less chavvy more respected)

The Peugeot 106 GTI hold onto their value better and you could argue that they are better looking than the Saxo, on account of the arches and bodywork looking better matched to the car. That said, the VTR/S look very nice when left alone and I'd imagine that those that are left cosmetically standard and in good condition are increasingly rare these days. I might be talking rubbish, but they seem to be going the same way as the 205 - The chavs have moved on and the nice examples stand out more.

Both will handle beautifully and provide a huge amount of fun - which makes up for all their faults. I suppose get whichever you can best afford.

I actually preferred the outside of the standard VTS, with the arches and soupbowl 14" dished wheels, but preferred the interior on the 106Gti back when we were choosing out the two in '99.
Such a better deal on a new VTS it's no wonder they were more common. It worked out £1500 cheaper for the Saxo. The 106s weren't fetching £1500 more when we came to sell so we did OK

Not really. Close enough to be similar. Puma is maybe 100kg heavyer, with a tiny bit more bhp and torque.

They feel 100x better though, more solid, they dont have stupid pedals either. We replaced my girlfriends 2001 106 with a 2000 puma, and the french car looks crap in comparison.

I've driven a 106 Gti and love it to bits; not driven a Saxo though. For some reason, all the magazines rate the 106 higher.
