Hi, im after a helmet to use for sprints and hillclimbs next year. I have asked around a few places and apparently the old BS approval thing no longer exists and is instead replaced with some sort of European approval etc etc??

Having looked at the MSA handbook today, it mentions the BS again and has no reference to the newer standards systems?

Does anyone know what I should do - buy a helmet with the Euro thingy or shall I try and find one with BS approval (might be difficult to find).

Thanks in advance,
Ben CA

Are you a member of the MSA? You will need to be to get your motor sport licence. Their Rule Book (the famous "Blue Book") contains all the information you need to know about all aspects of motor sport eqiupment (including helmets and clothing). You get a free copy of The Blue Book once you pay your annual fee.

Get yourself a decent lid from Demon Tweaks or Grand Prix Racewear, and you'll be fine. Always try it on before you buy though, as the various makes fit differently.

There are normally a few deals on at the Autosport show in January - Demon Tweaks usually have a stand there, as do other suppliers.

Right, let me re-write it again so perhaps people might actually read it.

***I HAVE THE MSA BLUE BOOK*** but it only mentions the BS approval which no longer exists.
therefore ***THERE IS NO POINT IN BUYING THE BEST I CAN FIND*** if scrutineering say it doesnt conform to MSA approved regs.

I want to know whether I am ok getting a helmet of the new standard, I know where to get a helmet, I just want to know it conforms to the relevant rules and regulations.

So then... can anyone tell me whether I am ok to buy a helmet with the new European standard logo rather than the BS one?? (which were killed off last year and therefore hard to find.)

I apologise if I sound just a little pissed off, its been a bit of a pants day.

I don't have the MSA book (so may be talking out of my sagaris) but doesn't that also list Snell helmets along with the BS ones? Snell helmets are readily available I thought, albeit expensive (but good).

Would prefer a less expensive helmet - its going to be used in a closed car with a nice big rollcage. I dont think im capable of enough damage to actually warrant an incredibly pricey helmet.

Also, if I damage that car, im not sure I would want my head intact knowing how much it costs to repair

Helmets are listed in the 2003 blue book page 250. Section Q-10.3.1.
