While I was on holiday the shutter release on my 40D (20 months old, 8000 shots) went intermittant and then packed up all together. The camera would auto-focus but wouldn't fire. A quick search on the internet confirmed that this is quite a common fault, with dirt building up in the switch. There are a couple of sites showing how to strip the camera down:

www.pbase.com/tobbenh/40dshutter

www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAWGScQeC5g

So I followed the instructions and did it myself:

Camera is now working perfectly again. The repair wasn't difficult and saved me at least £150...

Problem is I now need a different excuse to justify a 5D mk2...

You're a braver man than me! Well done for fixing it.

If that ever happens to mine, I think the £150 is far, far cheaper than buying a replacement camera! biggrin

I wouldn't recommend attempting this unless you're pretty confident - I have spent the last 14 years designing mobile phones, but this was quite a bit more complicated than any handset I've ever stripped down.

Well done. Did you have any bits left over?!
