I was out in my S1 tonight and i was pulling out of a junction but there was a tractor coming so i gave it big licks to get out infront of it but when i went from 1st to get 2nd i couldn't get the gear so i went for 3rd which engaged ok but when i let the clutch out it was in neutral (my 1st thought was i had ripped the middle out of the clutch), i then went for 2nd again which this time went in and when i let the clutch out it pulled away ok. Once underway i went for 3rd again (which goes in and feels like a positive engagment) it still wasn't there so i limped home with no 3rd gear and also found that i have ruined the syncro on 2nd.
I have concluded that the easiest fix would be to replace the gearbox but my question is do i have to source and fit a Capri gearbox or will one out of a Sierra fit maybe even a later one with reverse back to the right?

Hello Graham,

Have you checked the hydrolic system for leaks etc.A new master and slave cylinder could be all thats needed.I would also check the pushrod that sits in the slave cylinder, this wears after time.
This may help

To lou4010
Most of the gears work so it is not the hydraulic system it is just the syncro on 2nd and 3rd gear that is completly missing

I have been told that diesel engine sierras also have the longer input shaft, do you know if this is correct?

Graham

The diesel gearboxes do have the longer input shaft but the gearing is different and not suitable for the TVR. The V6 gearboxes are heavy duty and have a different front cover. The V6 gearbox can be identified by a stub/cover under the input shaft which i think houses a heavier duty layput shaft bearing, this is missing from the diesel box.

Don't discount the clutch - if you get the revs right it will go in gear without the clutch being disengaged, so the clutch could possibly be dragging (as you've broken it) or it could be hydraulics.
Does 1st gear engage perfectly at standstill or can it be a bit obstructive and give a bit of a thunk?

I'd check the hydraulics first, to check anything else you'll have to take the gearbox out anyway.

Before you start ripping things apart, is the gear lever mounting secured to the gearbox fully? If the bolts were to come loose you'll get gear selection issues. Not sure how easy it is to get at on a S1/2 but on the S3 you remove the center console and the gear lever gaiter and can the get your hand through the tub to the 3 bolts that need checking.

I've already got the gearbox out and taken the top cover off, it has ripped the teeth off the 3rd gear and damaged the baulk ring on 2nd. I think i've found a gearbox and i'm collecting it in the morning.

I did a lot of research on this when mine needed rebuilding and in the end had mine overhauled as there are so many variants that to get the right one is dfficult. You need one from a V6 - input shaft, with an electronic speedo drive (unless you have an S1 with the mechanical drive) as the casing differs between the two. This means you are limited to those supplied to TVR or fitted to the very early Granada 2.8s (and IIRC some later Sierras), a Capri one will not work as it has the mechanical drive. I have a pamplet that covers theconfigurations in pdf form if you want it email me at mark@gbsportscar.com and I'll reply with the file.

IMHO you would be better to find an old school rebuilder and have your current box stripped and rebuilt - mine cost £400 cash and transformed the car. This included new bearings, synchromeshes and seals throughout and a new half shaft and one of the gear wheels (I can't recall which)

Mark

ETA should have read the title - "S1 gearbox" of course that will have the mechanical speedo and will therefore be easier to cource as the early Capri boxes and early sierra ones fit too

I went and got the replacement gearbox this afternoon and fitted it to my car, it was out of a diesel Sierra but looked identical to the one i removed from my car so i assume mine had already been replaced if they are different from a v6 box, it drives just the same as before so the gear ratios appear to be the same aswell.
Not too bad a job after all the replacement box only cost me £40 and took about 15/20mins to refitt but now i'm back to the issue of my exhaust, i decided to make my own and put two pipes from the stainless manifolds straight through to the back of the car but it turns out that it's just a bit too loud and i'm going to have to source a couple of silencers.

Couple of cherry bombs could do the trick. Removes some of the high level noise and leaves the deep manly noise.
Still waiting to do mine, busy with work etc.

I'm glad you think that cos i've already ordered a pair of cherry bombs but didn't know if they would do the job or not.
