Scrappage Scheme
Discussion
Was nearlly interested in this for my partner but I can't quite convince myself there is any saving.
Say you have a 10 year old car, probably worth about £1k to sell privately.
If the car company has to put £1k in to match the governments £1k surely you could haggle at least that much of the ticket price, then sell your banger for £1k, then your at least at the same saving as the scrappage scheme.
So is there any real advantage or is it all hype?

I think there's savings to be had at the bottom end of the market, so you could get £2k off a £7k motor say, which you'd never haggle off.
The trouble is that it would be a crap car that you don't really want.
As you say unless the car is a worthless wreck with an MOT (how likely is that?) that you've had for over 12 months it doesn't really stack up.

Its pretty much hype. The only way I'd be interested in this scheme is if I was planning on buying a new car anyway and happened to have a 10 year old car knocking about.
The only way I can see it working out for you is to go in and negotiate as hard as you can, and if they knock a couple of grand off, then mention the scrappage scheme and see what happens. But to be honest very few new cars are worth their asking price IMO, would much prefer to buy a good used one.

I work for a Honda dealer as a salesman and the way it works for us (and most franchises)is manufacturer pays £500,Gov pay £1000 and dealer pays £500. now in some cases we don't make £500 profit on a new car so we will loose money on that particular deal. My opinion is that if you only have a car worth a couple of hundred quid or so then definatley do the scrappage scheme but if you have a car that has a book value of about £1200 or more (ish)then sell car privatley and negotiate a discount with no part exchange. If you want to know what your car books at then send me an email via my profile and I will check the trade guides and email you back same day
cheers.....Tony..
