As V8S mentioned on the macro thread Neil(4hero) has been blocked after words with a mod.nonoredcard

I have mailed him through Flickr and he asked me to pass on the following..."I will really miss the photography section of PH and will pop in every now and again to see what you lot are all up to. Pass on my best wishes to all the togs there if you can."

I guess we can all say things in the heat of the moment, I have (with Flasher) and others but it is sad when we lose a talent like Neil from the forum.

I will keep in contact through Flickr and I'm sure he would welcome other contacts from the forum.

Neil, you can kick my a-rse later but I will miss your special set of images, it's what got me into macro.

Something to do with the grid girls thread perhaps? I see theres been a cleanup of something and a 'nothing to see here, as you were' from a mod.

I never did understand the NSFW approach. I don't know anyone who is entitled to surf the net as part of their job and especially not to read a motoring forum.

If you surf it from home there's no issues. I fear the mods are being overcautious in an attempt to allow PH to be surfed during the day hence increasing the traffic to the site.

Sorry to hear that. Sometimes you have to walk away, even if you know you're right. Arguing with a moderator can only end one way.

Finest macro photos I've seen.

Big shame. He was always really helpful and the "what lens" wiki had a lot of useful info in from him as well (although that has also been the cause of me spending a fortune on kit punch)
Seems harsh if it's just over the exchange on the Gifs thread...

How long is the ban, nothing on PH is forever.

If you were to list all the people on the site in order of "should be banned" first, he'd be somewhere near the bottom. Even below me!

The decision to ban someone is not taken lightly. In 4Hero's case, it wasn't just "an exchange with a Mod", he told a mod where to go - in no uncertain terms.

That kind of thing does not sit well with the whole moderating community.

I agree - he made some fantastic contributions to this particular forum but you also need to know when to behave yourself.

Can you share the back story? He's never come across as a keyboard warrior in this section.

Having read the posts concerned, he posted something quite controversial, was asked to calm things down a bit in a jocular way and he responded with a resounding fk off.

Unsurprisingly, the mod concerned did not see the funny side.

Pistonheads has a reputation for unfair bannings, I've seen them discussed a few times on other forums.

Telling someone to fk off hardly constitutes a ban does it? There is enough moaning on these boards about removal of civil liberties without introuducing our own dictatorship.

It seems it was for the GIF-related postings then. Strangely, his comment caused me to raise an eyebrow and nothing more. I wouldn't have called it "resounding", but maybe that's because I'd agree with jon about how he came across during regular posting in this forum.

I'm fairly sure this is the thread that got Neil banned.

I've seen far far worse posted in the lounge and left alone, I guess someone in the mod community was having a bad day. Gazboy isn't innocent here but as he's a mod I guess that doesn't matter eh?

So Gazboy throws the first punch, his post was clear flamebait and 4hero replies with a sarcastic reply. Gazboy really was having a bad day.

Edited for unfortunate yet genuine typo.

Mmm. I can see both sides of the problem here.
PH side – the original “Volume 1” gif thread was closed because of the increase in the NSFW content. PH has obviously started to take a firmer stance regarding naked flesh and there was at least one warning on the Volume 1 thread to keep it clean. Neil posted several gifs in the new thread (I seen them before they were removed) and even I thought in the current climate that they were at the very least likely to be removed. A ban from the thread was perhaps slightly harsh considering Neil’s postings on other sections of PH showed he was a fairly long-standing valuable contributor but at least it allowed Neil to continue to contribute elsewhere.

Neil then started the now-locked thread in Website feedback where I feel he was baited by the mod, which resulted in the f-off post in reply. Perhaps it was meant tongue-in-cheek or perhaps Neil genuinely wanted the mod to f-off (I can see how the sentence could be read either way). Regardless of how it was meant I don’t think the actual sentence left the mod with any other option, other than to perhaps continue the dialogue with Neil via email in private.

I can completely understand PH’s recent increase in clamping down on NSFW content (although I wished I lived in a world where moderating such content wasn’t necessary) but it would be a shame to lose a valuable & knowledgeable member (particularly on the Photography forum) due to some ill-considered remarks both by Neil and by the mod.

This isn't meant as a criticsm of subforums at all, but it IS a side effect of having many topic subjects that a mod won't necessarily be familiar with the character of an individual that they might have to moderate.

Anyone who regularly reads/contributes to the Photo forum (or Scotland one) reckons it's tongue in cheek (me included). But it's easy to see why it might that come across that way if you didn't "know" him.

I thought it was fairly obvious it was tongue in cheek, i think itt would sound tongue in cheek no matter who said it.
