YLOD PS3 repair procedure!

Well, there ain't one from Sony.

I have an original xbox360 that just seems to go on and on, no need yet to call Microsoft for a RROD collection.

My brother on the other hand has the YLOD failure, which is about 16months old.
YLOD (yellow light of death)is now becoming quite a common fault on early PS3's, very similar problem to Xbox360. http://tinyurl.com/c9ldtl

He rang Sony repair center, and they want £145 to repair, he's well peed off after spending a small fortune on a PS3.
Sony say take it up with supplier (ie sale of goods)but thats a long drawn out affair, and so far cannot contact customer services for Dixon's group

Some people did get there ps3's fixed but Sony put a stop to it after people bought faulty PS3 off ebay and got free repairs.
Not a good show from Sony compared to Microsoft's RROD offer.

I sought of feel smug, as it was a standing joke between us about the RROD and how superior the PS3 was.

Anyone else had this dealt with sucessfully.

If you bh at them hard enough they'll deal with it, but you need a long drawn out speech and you need to be talking to someone fairly high up.

Also at 145 you might as well buy a second hand PS3 and see if you can flog the broken one.

I had a flashing red light of doom, I had to cough up the 145 quid for a new one. I have had it now for a couple of weeks, and occasionally switches itself off mid-game, which is frustrating when hosting a game full of PHers! It must have happened 4 or 5 times in a couple of weeks, and didn't happen once in 2 years with the old console.

Was he playing a game when it broke, and could he get the disc out?

Yes, he was playing a game when it happened and there is a disc stuck in the PS3, not sure what the title was/is but I think it was fairly new release.

Bit sharp of Sony to charge £145 for something that is really quite an expensive bit of kit.
If yours is still switching off, I'd have it sent back or they will no doubt charge again if outside there warranty period.

I know some people are stripping out the PS3 system-board and reflowing the solder joints using hot air guns, but that to be honest is a very hit and miss affair and why should you have to do that on something that fails shortly after the 1 year guarantee is up.

I will keep an eye on it for a bit, (the new warranty is 3 months). Any chance that the game he was playing was Race Driver: GRID? That was the game I was on when mine broke, and I have a sneaking feeling that it was the game that ended up breaking it. I haven't had my trapped disc back yet, when I finally get it back I will be flogging it so it doesn't break this one too.

16 months old isn't what is expected of electrical equipment. You can quote the sale of goods act at the shop which says that the product must last for a reasonable amount of time. They should replace it for you IIRC.

Before you do anything google for the sale of goods act.

They are flogging brand new PS3's for £199 in Asda, its the slightly older 40GB console, but it's still under £200.

After my experience with Sony replacing a faulty PS2, if my PS3 breaks I'm buying a new one from a shop, not a re-con from them! Way way back, when GT3 was new, my PS2 went mad- The fan got stuck at a very high speed (the amount of air it was blowing out was impressive), the screen went black and white but I could still play (but didn't, mind you) and when I ejected the disc the tray flew open and chucked the disc across the room. Sony replaced it free of charge, then after that I went through about 4 reconditioned PS2's before I realised they aren't worth the time or effort, went and bought a brand new one from Dixons and its still with me 6, maybe 7 years on.

A friend of mine corrupted his PS3 hard drive by turning it off at the back while it was saving, an easy fix and I told him I could do it but he wanted to claim it on the warranty. Sony took his PS3 off him and replaced it with one which got the yellow light fault within a week.

Not up for that, basically!
