Driving across Nevada, Interstate 80

In August I'll be driving across Nevada on Interstate 80 from near lake Tahoe on my way to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Has anyone done this route before and can you recommend a place to stop off over night on the way? Looking to stop roughly half way but will stop early or keep going a bit for somewhere intersting.

Also if there is anything else along this route that might be worth checking out let me know.
