My son was tinkering with his S2 (fixing a coolant leak due to a jubilee clamp snapping). After fixing it, he ran the car up and down a road for a bit, then attempted to open the bonnet to check all was well. However, the bonnet release catch was stiff, and the cable snapped. A portion of the cable that is attached to the release catch has come out of the hole and into the car, and the other half (attached to the bonnet releases inside the bonnet) has gone back through the hole under the steering column. The bonnet did pop itself open, but he daren't close it as there's no way he can re-open it. How can he get to the piece of cable that is now residing somewhere infront of the dashboard? (in the same place the windscreen wiper motors are house I think). Cheers.

I have done a search, and found this topic http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... . However, his puley system isn't like the one pictured. Only one cable comes off the pulley (not two as in the pictures), and this travels straight through past the steering column and into the bonnet release assembly. When the cable snapped, one half came out and is inside the cockpit, and the other half flew back through the hole. How does he fit a new cable?

I think there are two holes in the side of the bracket through the fibreglass in the engine bay, not obvious unless you're looking for them.

I also know that in mine when you're standing on your head in the footwell you can see daylight out through the bonnet catch, not that this helps I guess irked

The seat only has 4 bolts holding it in, access is improved massively under the dash if you take the seat out.

From personal experience (just ask my knuckles and back) you can get at both bonnet catches from either footwell. You need a good socket set, long arms, patience and a sense of humour.

On the passenger side they are in amoung the electrics so you will need to be careful and methodical which is easier spaid than done when the drivers side took an hour....

They are not obvious but I think IIRC you need a 1/2" socket.

Once they are undone you can just lift the bonnet clear and make the necessary repairs.

If you look at the picture again you will see there is only one cable. It runs from one catch to the other with a bare section which goes round the nylon pully in the pic The nylon pully is on an excetric cam, you will also see two adjustors. I suspect if you take the whole cable to a good push bike shop and they would be able to replace the inner

Ahh I see about the cable.....however, his car only has one cable going into the front of the car to the bonnet releases. The bonnet is open (it did pop despite the cable snapping), and he's left it open. However, he can't see any way to get into the snapped cable. I'm guessing the cable travels near to the windscreen wiper motors, so if someone could explain how to open this part of the car, that may help.

The trim under the glove box is normally held up by a mixture of velcro and a threaded nut of some sort, if you release both the carpet cover should fall into the footwell followed by a rats nest of wiring and the ECU. It will need to be restuffed into the space available carefully once you have finished. But its likely to fall down again!!

I don't think any self-respecting rat would ever be able to replicate that tangle of Blackpool spaghetti! biggrin

There's a big mesh of wire hanging down next to the boot release anyway.

How does he get into the wiper assembly? I'm pretty sure this will help him find the wire that has snapped and retreated from the footwell back into the innards of the car.....I may post some pictures as it's hard to explain, but incredibly simple once you see it!

have a look at this - i know that the problem you have is slightly different but I found this a useful explanation of how the whole thing works. Good luck...

Hmmm, many people seem to be telling me how to open the bonnet. That isn't the issue here, as the bonnet HAS opened. My son had a better look at the cable today, and he has found that the wire travel through a hole, into a rubber cable (similar to how brake cables are sheathed on a bike). This cable then travel up to the right hand side of the footwell and disappears into the bulkhead/bonnet. The cable has snapped and disappeared back inside this rubber cable. How can he get the cable out of the rubber cover and put a new one in? Shall I just take it to selby TVR for him?

you should be able to get to the other end of the cable where it attaches to the catch itself, probably by removing the catch and pulling it through?
