RRoD - MS won't replace
Discussion
Bought my Xbox 360 in December 2005. In March 2007 it had RRoD. It was returned and I was sent a refurb. July 2009 and this one has now got RRoD.
Microsoft won't repair it FOC as they claim it's now out of warranty, arguing that the three year extended warranty that's issued for RRoD runs from the date the machine was purchased.
Normally they charge £82 + VAT to repair, however, being the generous f
kers they are they're doing it for only £68 + VAT. I asked why the f
k would I possibly want to spend that much to have them repair it when for £20 more I could buy a brand new one. They couldn't suggest a reason why I would. I also told them that this wasn't exactly an isolated issue was it, it's a known design fault, hundreds (if not thousands) of people have suffered this, there are numerous class action lawsuits against MS for this very reason and that I didn't feel that 28 months was a reasonable expected lifespan for a games console especially as my 9 year old PS2 still works perfectly as does my 7 year old Xbox.
My feedback was noted and perhaps they'll change their mind. Anyone had any luck pursuing these t
ts and their piece of s
t failing hardware when it's out of warranty?

I would argue that the warranty should be against the console and not the person and also that 28 months is not reasonable use.
I would also argue that the original replacement was not a reasonable replacement as it has broken as well.
Not just MS tbh, trying to get anything from car to toaster sorted outside of warranty normally leads to a dead end

This is the part i'm disputing though. They say the 3 year warranty runs from date of purchase, I argued that's b
ks and should be from when I receive the replacement as it's a different machine and not the one I originally purchased. said:

Sales of Goods Act states that there should be a reasonable life expectency for these sort of appliances, usually about 5 years. I'd say two failures within 3.5 years certainly isn't reasonable. said:

I shall try that. My biggest issue is that this is a KNOWN fault, it's not isolated to just me and me alone. Apparently something like 30% of 360's sold so far have suffered RRoD. That's a hell of a lot of failures. If that was a car manufacturer and 30% of one of their models sold suffered some catastrophic failure there'd be a recall. I don't see why I should pay MS to repair it, it's THEIR design fault and where exactly do you draw the line? Should I have to buy a new console every few years because they can't manufacture something that works properly? A cycnic might suggest it's designed to fail just out of warranty.Edited by Oakey on Wednesday 22 July 16:58
