That is one pretty car! Why are you posting silly questions instead of test driving it?

Hi there,

There is always a debate between Toyota 111R and the Rover engined 111S. At the end of the day it really is down to personal preference. They both have good and bad points and as such have buyers for both, so resale not really an issue.

As above test drive both.

Looks good in the picture !

I agree with Gooby, that is a rather nice example and worthy of a test drive! smile The 111S and 111R are very different cars. The 111S incorporates the 160bhp K-Series VVC engine, whereas the 111R utilises the 197bhp Toyota engine and gearbox. The latter is favoured for the second cam change at ~6,000rpm (Can be reduced to 5,400rpm with a remap), which gives an additional and noticeable boost of power.

Some of us are not so keen on the second cam changeover - It's really a question of, do you want to be on the limit to get the very best performance out of the car and do you mind the additional power kicking in if you're half way round a corner?

The 111R has additional luxuries such as ABS and better build quality, but a low priced one may need some work to bring it up to speed.

Personally, I'd test drive both and see what appeals to you more smile

Sorry 111R has 189 bhp, Dont let the second cam put you off, one of the main loves of the 111R by many Elise / Exige owners , and still plenty of fun on the road without second cam

Still like the Elise in the ad you mention tho!

Eek! Bit off on the power figures! Either way, both are worth driving! And I'm just jealous I don't have a second cam wink

The one above is the Elise S which is the Toyota unit basically without the Second cam (134bhp) with 5 speed box instead of 6. But this gets the thumbs up from the likes of EVO and lot people on here.

Price looks ok considering previous damage, cannot comment on damage as not sure if that would of impacted anything other than the clam ? Wait for comments from others on that.

So looks like you have three to test so far ! 111S, R and then the S.

I was recently in the similar position myself and ended up with a 55 Reg 111s.

I figured (rightly or wrongly) that one of the last 111s would have had most of the development work done on it and potentially fewer niggles than an early version of the R. When I was looking comparable (in price) Rs were higher mileage and hadn't been looked after as well as the 111s.

I previously had a turbo-charged car and had got used to torque rather than a very high revving engine.

dont ask 111s or 111r - you will just hear about what people own. Go and drive a few, see what you like.

+1 probably good to try a couple of examples of the model you prefer too. But guess that is commonsense.

On the otherhand I saw my car on the Wednesday (first example) seemed mint, bought it and was off to Europe by the Friday night smile Nothing like getting your car for the first time and going straight off on a road trip. Two years later and 17,000 miles later I am still loving it!
