Myself, 308miss and another couple have decided to go away for the last weekend of August.

I figured Britain would be pretty much gridlocked, much as I fancy Wales or Scotland. So we're looking to Europe.

There are cheap flights to Marseille but I really dont know the region at all. Ive been either side to Montpellier and Cannes but skipped that bit so far.

Does it make a good weekend destination? Is there some nice scenery within driving distance? A beach would be nice if poss.

Other ideas for good weekend breaks welcome.

Mods, please dont move this to holidays and travel. I think the post count there speaks for itself as far traffic goes - Im actually hoping for some help here

I was did the Crumball rally recently and we ended up in Nice! It lives up to it's name, but if you're going with the missus then make sure you take your non-seethrough shades so you don't get caught perving! Although it does only have a pebbled beach.

It's pretty bloody expensive down there at the moment too, well the whole of France in fact! The euro-pound rate doesn't help. Cheapest beer was £3.20, most expensive was £7. Cheap wine from the supermarkets though! Petrol is around £1.30/litre.

Amazing part of France though.

Head eastwards from Marseille and there are some good driving roads up in the hills of the Alpes-Maritimes. Unfortunately there will also be cyclists, and French drivers.

We've just booked a self catering Gite in the Dordogne. There are some good deals to be had. Try www.ownersdirect.com

We were going to fly, but the flights that started at £98 for the two of us return cranked up to £254. AND thenit was £15 to use my debit card. Bollards to that, so I'm driving down. Airlines (Body Mass Index Baby) are nasty.
